Hi Everyone. Well, after 15 years the RV-Dreams Community Forum is coming to an end. Since it began in August 2005, we've had 58 Million page views, 124,000 posts, and we've spent about $15,000 to keep this valuable resource for RVers free and open. But since we are now off the road and have settled down for the next chapter of our lives, we are taking the Forum down effective June 30, 2021. It has been a tough decision, but it is now time.


We want to thank all of our members for their participation and input over the years, and we want to especially thank those that have acted as Moderators for us during our amazing journey living and traveling in our RV and growing the RV-Dreams Family. We will be forever proud to have been founders of this Forum and to have been supported by such a wonderful community. Thank you all!!

Can of worms


Just ordered new tires, upgraded to the ones suggested on the forum.  We were going with Goodyear G114, 215/75R17.5 H instead of the G614.  Now we need to figure out what wheels we need to go with the "New" axles we will need to get.  The axles will be Dexter 8000 lb.  The local dealer that is ordering the axle has a steel wheel in stock, but wondering if we should get the aluminum ones instead. 

What a can of worms, and this is all Greek to us.  Any words of wisdom out there?

Steel is durable and will take more abuse.............Aluminum is lite, prettier , And polishes up well.........next year we will discuss plastic.

Thanks Mike and Howard.  We have been looking at the ones you mention Howard and will probably go with that one. When I was trying to explaine the specs of the wheels to the shop in Tacoma, where we are ordering the axle, he didn't understand what I was saying and wasn't sure they would fit the Dexter axle.  I didn't understand the  (Offset: "0".  Hub bore: 4.9 and the 9/16-18 60 degree ss capped lug nuts) and know I wasn't explaining it very well.  

I should hear back from the tire shop in Tacoma next week, he's checking into aluminum ones for us. If the price is close to the same, we would like to get them locally.  Dexter can't get the axles made untill after the first of the year and there is no shipping if it comes in on his stock order.

Hank, since you are upgrading your axles and suspension, have you considered th Mor/Ryde Independent Suspension? You might be really surprised because the cost difference should not be that much more and you will get a much better system that will also add strength to the trailer frame.

I DEFINITELY would not do this upgrade without adding Mor/Ryde IS suspension. You WILL regret it if you do not.

Thanks for the suggestions on tbe Mor/Ryde IS. We had heard of the hitch pin box from Mor/Ryde, but not the IS. Yesterday we talked to our local RV shop and he is gonig to get some info for us. I also think we need to contact DRV and get their recommendation on what axle and wheels to get, we have been looking at the Dexter for the axle and the wheels that Howard suggested. This is all so out of our realm of knowledge, I feel like we're wondering in the dark.confuse

 I would contact Mor/Ryde - that is good advice. They can do the ENTIRE job for you, and it will be RIGHT. And priced very well too. The way I would build it out would be 8K Dexters (or an appropriate rating for your weights), Mor/Ryde IS, Dexter disc brakes, Tuscon ABS actuator with in-cab controller, 17.5 wheels with Goodyear G114 tires.  If you are going to drop one item from that list I'd consider dropping the ABS brakes and going with whatever actuator M/R recommends. 

If you are switching axles because of wheel stud issues you don;t really need to. Take a look at Mark Bruss's site and it will walk you through the switchover.

 Since you say you have no knowledge about what to do, why not contact Mor/Ryde and get their advice.  A cobbled together system is worse than no system at all.  Mor/Ryde is the premiere suspension system out there.  They do this upgrade daily, if not multiple times per day.  If I were to follow anyone's advice, I would believe what Jack mayer suggests.  He is in the process of specifying the details of his new RV from New Horizons, a top of the line 5er, so his research would be current and applicable.

Thanks Jack & Merc 53 for the info on Mor/Ryde. Things are starting to come together, and with a little luck we will be on the road by the end of January. We have the wheels on order from trailer tire and wheel. We already have the Goodyear G114 tires. Tomorrow we'll get the Dexter axles ordered. We don't have anyone in our area that can do the Mor/Ryde IS. Mor/Ryde has a dealer in southern OR that can do the job, or we will need to go back to IN. so that will have to be done later. 

It would have been best to get everything done at the same time, but we don't feel comfortable about hitting the road until we get new tires, so here we are. Our 5er is rated at GVWR 1600lbs and UVW 14234. It has 7000lb axles with 7year old tires that have spent a lot of time sitting. The previous own added a generator, and we have added 4 Lifeline L16T batteries, Magnum inverter charger and a washer & dryer. We may be OK if I don't put any groceries or water on board.blankstare
