Hi Everyone. Well, after 15 years the RV-Dreams Community Forum is coming to an end. Since it began in August 2005, we've had 58 Million page views, 124,000 posts, and we've spent about $15,000 to keep this valuable resource for RVers free and open. But since we are now off the road and have settled down for the next chapter of our lives, we are taking the Forum down effective June 30, 2021. It has been a tough decision, but it is now time.


We want to thank all of our members for their participation and input over the years, and we want to especially thank those that have acted as Moderators for us during our amazing journey living and traveling in our RV and growing the RV-Dreams Family. We will be forever proud to have been founders of this Forum and to have been supported by such a wonderful community. Thank you all!!

Neutral / ground.........new outlet would call electrician back , could be a bad or loose connection at the plug or faulty GFI

 

are you using a standard 110 outlet.........a 30 amp 3 blade or a 4 pin 50?

This is important to answer your question......on a 110 nutral / ground will only affect gfi

30 amp with a bad nuetral ground will have no return so voltage will be floating up and down on your meter but now power is downstream

 

if your protector is portable....check plug and outlet of the unit for burn marks or heating / check plug for loose tines or cord damage

I finally got an outlet installed so I can plug our little mpg in without having to use an extension cord and adaptor. I have a Progressive Industries portable surge protector which is always used. I plugged in the surge protector, and the lights said I had an "Open neutral." Grrrr. Turned power off and checked all connections. All tight, and the meter says all is good, at least as far as I can test. Power back on, and now it says open ground. ????? Power off, check everything again. All good. Power back on and plugged everything in.

I'm wondering if the problem is with the surge protector. The green surge protection light is on, so I would assume that it hasn't taken a jolt, but who knows. Oh yes, voltage is about 125.

Ideas?

We have the Progressive Industries hard wired model but I'm sure the portable works the same.  If you have either an open neutral or an open ground then the unit will not allow electricity to pass through the unit to your RV.  When you say you're testing with a meter do you mean a multi-meter?  If so you should get a voltage reading from hot to neutral and hot to ground.  If either fails then you have a wiring problem somewhere along the line. If the meter shows voltage with those 2 tests then I'd plug the PI unit into another outlet somewhere and see if it's working OK.
