Hi Everyone. Well, after 15 years the RV-Dreams Community Forum is coming to an end. Since it began in August 2005, we've had 58 Million page views, 124,000 posts, and we've spent about $15,000 to keep this valuable resource for RVers free and open. But since we are now off the road and have settled down for the next chapter of our lives, we are taking the Forum down effective June 30, 2021. It has been a tough decision, but it is now time.

We want to thank all of our members for their participation and input over the years, and we want to especially thank those that have acted as Moderators for us during our amazing journey living and traveling in our RV and growing the RV-Dreams Family. We will be forever proud to have been founders of this Forum and to have been supported by such a wonderful community. Thank you all!!

Wannabees, Gonnabees, Hopefully!

Hey Everyone! I'm so happy that I found this site. My husband and I have been discussing buying a used RV and just getting the heck out of here with our kids as soon as we can. We are from Newark, NJ and we just don't feel like we belong. The people around here (including family) are really negative and draining. Bunch of emotional vampires lol. Just joking...but in all seriousness, we are ready to go! All we have to do is save up a good amount of money so we can at least get out of here, travel for a little bit and settle somewhere else. We are planning to homeschool both of our kids. I am homeschooling my youngest son right now, he is in first grade. My oldest is in 5th.

The biggest problem I think we are going to have is telling our family that we're planning on leaving. We're not going to say anything until the plans are set in stone, but when we do tell them, I believe all hell is gonna break loose! Please, my sister in law is pissed at me because I'm homeschooling my son...can you imagine when we tell her we're going to live on the road and homeschool the kids?! Hahaha she's gonna flip. I said we should just call his family from the road and say, "Oh, by the way...we're moving. We'll be back eventually! Love ya, bye!" LOL I know we can't do that, but it sure beats tears, anger, and sadness.

One question I have for families that live on the road with younger children: How do you and your spouse get some, um, "alone time" once in a while...you know what I mean. How? When? Where? What if the kids hear? (blushing) Well, you know...it's important! Hahaha :)

I look forward to making some new friends on here. Hopefully we'll catch each other on the road one day!

Beth and Rob,

Welcome to the RV Dreams forums.  You are fortunate as there are others with your same dream, although there won't be that many that have children and are traveling and home-schooling.  Most of us are older couples, but you will still find a lot with the answers to your questions.  Well, except for one considering that many of us don't have our kids with us.

Perhaps a way to soften up your family is to just "talk about" those that are now living full time with subtle comments about that "might be fun."  Then, given time, who knows, some might even get the same idea.

Welcome to the family of active participants.  Feel free to ask your questions as there are lots of folks here with the knowledge you are seeking and they are friendly as well.

Good luck with your research and planning.

Terry

Welcome to the family. To answer a question.... If you get a used Rv with a bed that has a door that closes then you can find a quiet moment after you get the kids to sleep. And as far as hearing anything turn on a radio and relax. I am home schooling my son and with luck in feb or march we will get our RV and then it is over the road we will go. I hope this has helped in some way. LOL I wish you luck. Enjoy life together. :)

To answer your question: Get a traier with a solid door, and wait unitl the kids are asleep.

Many years ago, in a 16 foot trailer our then 8 year son noticed that the trailer was "rocking" during the night. We told him it was really windy that night. Today at 30, I think he still believes it!

We now full time with my adult, mentally diasbled sister- in-law. We wait until she is asleep.

The radio idea is a god one.

Just be discreet.

Thanks so much to all who have replied. Please forgive me by not addressing everyone by name, as it just turned 7am and there is no coffee in my system yet. :)

All of your tips have been very helpful and I'm grateful! I cannot wait to reach this goal. I will be browsing through the site for a few days to see if I can have all or most of my questions answered. If I cannot find everything I'm looking for, I'll be sure to ask.

Thanks again, Everyone! Have a blessed day!

My wife and I have used Terry and Jo's suggestion, talking about other fulltimers and how that might be something we would like to do. We gradually increased the talking till several months ago we broke it to them that the house will most likely go up for sale in spring, and we will be moving into our 5ver in a local campground. I still don't think all of them believe it is going to happen since we have been talking about this for several years.
As far as the alone time the solid door and radio worked for us for years while vacationing in our rv. Good luck and remember it's your dream, not everyone has the same dreams.

Allen
