We wish you well in both the job and what you will get to explore in the area. Unfortunately, I can't give you any clues as to what to check out as we've never vacationed much back that way.

Lots in that area to explore since you are at the south end of Shenandoah National Park and the north end of the Blue Ridge Parkway. Lots more including caverns and Natural Bridge are within a day trip. Enjoy.

If you like wines, take US-250 out of Waynesboro to Route 151 south. You can also take I-64 East to the US-250 exit at Afton then hang a right at the end of the ramp. that will take you down 250.

You will have to go off that road a couple of times but there are at least 6 wineries and 3 micro-breweries on that road. Afton, Veritas, Cardinal Point, Hilltop Berry Farm, Wintergreen and one other I don't remember are the wineries.

Just get on 151 south and look for signs.

There are also caverns to the north of there, once again, memory escapes me.

If you golf, Swananoa is a decent course that is decently priced. The greens are tough to read but the view and price make up for it.

Staunton< Va. is where the Statler Brother are from.

If you are into history this is a great area for Civil War buffs.

Take a drive down Hywy 11 to Lexington where you'll find VMI and Washington and Lee University.

Go to Lee Chapel at VMI. Beautiful chapel and the Lee family museum and crypt are in on the lower level.

We really love that area of Virginia.

We have lived in VA since 1988 and as others have said…wineries, Shenandoah NP, Blue Ridge Parkway, Luray Caverns are all very nice. There are plenty of Civil War sites in VA as well; we've been to the Wilderness Battle Area National Monument and a couple of others in the past year or so and the guided tours make the history and the "why did the battle happen that way" questions really come to life. Reading about it on the sign boards and visitor center isn't nearly as illuminating as actually walking the battle lines and seeing why and how each side made the mistakes they did and how those mistakes (and the times when they were right) made key differences in the outcome.

There's also DC and all the museums as well; once you finish your month come on up to northern VA…Bull Run Regional Park has a nice campground as does Lake Fairfax Park. There are a whole bunch of nice ones further south near Richmond…Occoneechee and the one right near the Nuclear Power Station come to mind (Lake Anna maybe) are very nice as well. We stayed at one over near Appomatox as well…all of these three are VA state parks and nicely maintained.

Nice place! We have been there but not camped. Our daughter lives nearby in Stuarts Draft, VA. We might be interested in vlunteering there later on in the summer once DH is able to travel again should they have some openings. However, she says it gets a little loud and roudy there in the tent camping area on the weekends.

Let us know how difficult the chores (work) there is so we can determine if DH will be up to the work. You can send us a PM if you would like.
