Hi Everyone. Well, after 15 years the RV-Dreams Community Forum is coming to an end. Since it began in August 2005, we've had 58 Million page views, 124,000 posts, and we've spent about $15,000 to keep this valuable resource for RVers free and open. But since we are now off the road and have settled down for the next chapter of our lives, we are taking the Forum down effective June 30, 2021. It has been a tough decision, but it is now time.
We want to thank all of our members for their participation and input over the years, and we want to especially thank those that have acted as Moderators for us during our amazing journey living and traveling in our RV and growing the RV-Dreams Family. We will be forever proud to have been founders of this Forum and to have been supported by such a wonderful community. Thank you all!!
I'm wondering about the value/benefit of dinette cabinets that I see in a lot of MH & 5er floor plans. How useful are they? Is the storage in that location worth it? Is storage convenient to access? It seems to me that you might lose some space? I would love to hear the pros & cons.
Thanks,
Sherry

Are you referring to a booth dinette rather than a free-standing table and chairs?
A booth dinette gives you some storage space under the seats and usually converts into a bed. Since it is in a fixed location, it may not work well as extra seating when you have guests. A free-standing table and chairs can be arranged as you see fit, and often two or more of the chairs fold, so they can be stored elsewhere when you don't need the seating. A free-standing dinette will usually have a more open feel.
Which is better? That's your call. If you regularly have three or more people eating, you will have the chairs and table space occupied that the booth dinette will need anyway. If it is just two of you most of the time, the free-standing dinette will open things up a bit, at the cost of some storage space.
Are you refering to the storage below the seats in a dinette? The storage can be quite cumbersome to get to however storage is storage. If it is something you need to get to every day---not so good, if you only need it once a month then not so bad, at least it is out of the way for most of the time.

It's a combination desk and dining table. We added one to our 5th wheel and it is great.
I've also seen cabinets without a desk opening just additional drawers or shelves. Just like in a sticks and bricks house you have extra floor space in RVs with multiple slide outs. In the past the manufacturers didn't do anything with this floor space. They thought RVers preferred the wide open look. So everything was pushed to the sidewalls and you ended up with a lot of empty floor space.
Now that we have this desk/dining table setup, we move the dining table out into the floor space (like in the first photo on the website). That allow us to use the desk plus have a dining area.
We still have plenty of room to walk by the dining table.
Adding this desk/dining table combination was one of the best changes we have made to our 5th wheel.

Sorry I wasn't more clear. A dinette cabinet is what it was called on a manufacturer's floor plan. I've seen them in MH's and large Fifth Wheels. It's the wall cabinet usually under the window where the table (not booth) is. It's like a small sideboard in a sticks and bricks home. It just seems to me to just take up room and I'm not sure the storage offered in them are helpful or if it just takes up space.

What a creative idea! That's a nice idea. The desk is similar to what I was referring to and built in in the same space. What we'd like to have is a table that could seat 6 and it seems like the buffets would prevent that.

A friend had their standalone table in their Newmar retrofitted and the Amish guy supplied an extra leaf that made the table able to seat six. They would rotate the table 90 degrees to seat six, much like Bear II does. The extra leaf was narrower than the existing table leaf since it could not be wider and still get installed. They also used outside chairs for the ends. The retrofit to add a desk to the table is commonly done by the Amish and Mennonite craftsman around the factories in Indiana.

Our table expands and has a leaf stored inside below the table top. It will seat six. It does have to sit in the middle of the floor so it gets a little tough to move around if there are six seated at the table. If one person needs to get up it usually means one or two will need to move to provide an exit.
We can seat four people comfortably and still have room to move around the table and chairs.

Thanks all for your ideas & comments. I LOVE the friendliness ofthis forum. I don't know how to copy & paste a floor plan but here is a link to the type of dinette set ups I'm wondering about.
A few weeks back, I went to take pictures of a Mobile Suites 38PS3 (actually a 38PS4 since they added a vanity slide in the bedroom), and I've posted some photos on my Photobucket account for the benefit of a couple that was wanting to see pictures of that model.
Some of the pictures I took are of that cabinet and table. Below are some links. You can get a wee bit of an idea of how big the storage areas are. With regards to the side storage area picture, that is duplicated on the other side.
A link to the full set of pictures are next, but be warned....there are about 130 pictures to look at of that particular unit. This link takes you to a slideshow so the pictures are bigger to look at instead of having to click on every image.
Of course I had to look at all 130 photos (funky mirror one was good!). Your photos of the dinette prove my point, while the storage looks pretty good it seems as if it just take up space and I can't imagine climbing under the table to get stuff. Might be a benefit for full-timers but it seems as if it would be difficult to seat four comfortably. Would love to hear from those who have that if you like it. Thanks again, Sherry

Well, I can't speak to the use of one yet. We have one on order and are going to sell our "regular" table with two of the chairs. We'll keep two chairs for use with the dining table. We are full timers and Jo really likes that new one. In our case, while we will only have two chairs, we each have a "work" chair elsewhere that can be pulled to the table when we have company.
Jo's work chair is at her sewing center and mine is at the desk in the 38TKSB3.
I don't know what you want to know about the table, and we won't have ours for about a month. The dealer we are ordering through will probably be picking up a new DRV Suites unit about then and will bring the table back with them. That way, we avoid the shipping costs for the table.
Question: By the "funky" mirror picture, are you talking about that "strange self portrait?"

Thanks so much for posting those pictures of the new MS unit. I was wondering what the inside looked like.
Question.....do all of the new MS units come with the LP and CO detectors?
Comment: I know a couple from Wyoming that have a 2010 MS RESb3 (at least I think that's the model, the one with the L-shaped sofa). I have spoken with them twice now on visiting with them at the campground on Jekyll Island, GA. Their kitchen sink has dropped out of its space three times, each time they had to take it back to the factory. Have you ever heard of this in any other units? It looks like the sinks in the new units are better situated.
We are looking to get our first MS unit from Rolling Retreats when we are ready to purchase. Thanks for giving us the link to their website. I have been following them for a couple of years now, and I like what I see.
I'm not Terry but have read of several instances of sinks dropping out of the cabinet.Seems to be a problem with some Mobile Suites as I've not heard anyone else have this happen.I believe someone on this forum actually had it happen to them.

RVing probably not a reality any more.It was a good time while it lasted.
I have a Select Suite and both of my sinks have fallen out at one time or another. I scrape off the adhesive of both the sink and undercounter and reapply adhesive caulk. I hold it in place with the metal straps used to hold the air conditioning conduit in S&B's. I tighten the strap with a wooden wedge. The first sink dropped over two years ago and the "fix" has held up since then. However we do not travel with the drop in counter top in the sink well.

Yes, the Suites come with the detector as do a lot of other brands. As for the sink dropping, it does happen, but I doubt that it is only DRV products that are doing it. If you order your unit as you want it configured, it isn't hard to ask them to reinforce the sinks. If you buy it "off the lot," it is likely you could work a deal where the dealer would reinforce it for you.
We've not had an issue, but we've not towed ours for very many miles. As already mentioned, we don't travel with our sink covers in place either. That is just extra weight to be working on the sinks on rough roads.
Alicia and Slade are great to work with there at Rolling Retreats. We've ordered one of the new style dining tables from them as Jo likes them better than the table we currently have. We will be going over to have them perform the recall on our wheels and install the new dining table. I may just talk to them and see if they would do something to reinforce our kitchen sink as well.
Funny thing, Alicia and Slade had sold a MS to someone and there were a few issues that needed to be addressed. While Slade worked on the issues, Alicia and the buyer went shopping. They stopped by to see us while they were in the City.
Good luck with the planning. If you want pictures of a Mobile Suites with lighter wood (the Suite Oak finish), check out this link named "Our New Home." We like the lighter finish as it seems to make our interior much lighter, and we like things to be light.

Thanks Racerguy and Jim. Jim - good thing you are handy!
Terry - thanks for the photos of the lighter wood unit. Very nice! When lighter wood is used, it makes the space look larger. I am also really liking the Whirlpool washer and dryer.
I kind of like the new dinette cabinets they are installing in the units now. It's nice to have a place to set pictures and maybe some flowers, etc. And storage underneath can always be used for stuff that is not used much. Know what else I like? The fact that the windows actually have windowsills! The 2010 DRV catalog I have that I look at on an almost daily basis will probably be the year that we will be looking at to purchase from Alicia and Slade. Hopefully they will have some by the time we are ready to full time.
