Hi Everyone. Well, after 15 years the RV-Dreams Community Forum is coming to an end. Since it began in August 2005, we've had 58 Million page views, 124,000 posts, and we've spent about $15,000 to keep this valuable resource for RVers free and open. But since we are now off the road and have settled down for the next chapter of our lives, we are taking the Forum down effective June 30, 2021. It has been a tough decision, but it is now time.


We want to thank all of our members for their participation and input over the years, and we want to especially thank those that have acted as Moderators for us during our amazing journey living and traveling in our RV and growing the RV-Dreams Family. We will be forever proud to have been founders of this Forum and to have been supported by such a wonderful community. Thank you all!!

Water King Water softener/conditioner

Anyone have any experience with the "Water King" system for RV use. We spend most of our time in the west,especially NV & CA, where hard and mineral laden water is the norm. Have seen units where you need to add salt, like we used to have in the house.Would like to avoid that if possible.Saw ad for the Water King electronic system. Seems like it would work. Before shelling out $360 or so, thought I'd check with other forum members. Thanks,

We use multiple house filters, plus a Brita pitcher for drinking water and that seems to be enough for us in most places. Eight years in 49 states and six Canadian provinces and our faucets have only minimal deposits on them. We wash our clothes in the water. The first couple of years I would taste the water at most campgrounds while hooking up, after rinsing the faucet with bleach solution since many rinse their sewer hose there. Now I don't since the majority of the time the inside water tastes fine after using a Brita pitcher. But I still do the bleach solution.

Are you worried about drinking water or gumming up faucets? An RO system for drinking water is cheaper and gallons of drinking water are only 25c or so at many kiosks.

Anyway I will say that some of the best water we have encountered was in the West and some of the worst elsewhere. We have encountered bad water in the West, Bullhead City AZ comes to mind, but we have found lousy water in Kansas, Minnesota, Alaska, North Dakota and Florida that I can remember. But we have also found that you can have good water in one town and 20 miles away it is terrible. My in-laws water in Kennewick, WA was terrible, but our water a few miles away where we lived in Richland, WA was good. The KOA in Bismarck, ND is on a well with terrible water while the nearby Prairie Breeze campground in Menoken is on city water and it is quite good.

I have seen Water King's outside some RVs and find it really funny when they have them hooked up where the water is good.

I know this is not helping you with how well does the Water King work.

Do some research on this type of product. I have never seen an independent review that confirmed that this kind of unit (like wrapping magnets around your pipes) actually does anything of any value. It's certainly not going to remove anything like a salt based softener will and I think most reviews place these unit in a value range just slightly above snake oil.

My concern is totally about gumming/clogging the plumbing system. In our house in Las Vegas, we replaced water shutoffs after a few years,which werer almost totally occluded.That was with a water softener installed.We've already had calcium deposits obvious on our sink faucets,after six months of being back here. We may come back after the summer, for 9 more mos,so I'm concerned about the RV pipes. Drinking water is not a problem,we use bottled.
