Hi Everyone. Well, after 15 years the RV-Dreams Community Forum is coming to an end. Since it began in August 2005, we've had 58 Million page views, 124,000 posts, and we've spent about $15,000 to keep this valuable resource for RVers free and open. But since we are now off the road and have settled down for the next chapter of our lives, we are taking the Forum down effective June 30, 2021. It has been a tough decision, but it is now time.

We want to thank all of our members for their participation and input over the years, and we want to especially thank those that have acted as Moderators for us during our amazing journey living and traveling in our RV and growing the RV-Dreams Family. We will be forever proud to have been founders of this Forum and to have been supported by such a wonderful community. Thank you all!!

Advise on purchasing 5th wheel

Hello everyone I am looking at a 2005 Jayco Designer 38 RDQS . The unit is in great shape and has very little miles towed. Has one a/c  and no generator.

Does anyone have info. or experience on the unit?  Thanks in advance!confuseconfuse

Well, the first thing to do is check the tires. Especially if it sat a lot. In general, most people advise that tires be switched out in the 5-7 year period. They may look fine, but be ready to die. And it can be an ugly death - requiring lots of RV repair.

I have to agree with Jack on the tire question. If the tires on the 5er are original equipment, I would first off go get me a new set of tires. Brand choice? That is yours to make. However, I would do a lot of research in that area. Some people would not have any thing but Goodyear, others consider them trash. Carlisle, same thing. Anything made in China is suspect in the RVing area. Personally, I have been happy with Michelin XPS Ribs for over 4 years. I may change them out before going to Oregon this summer.
As far as the Jayco, if you are not experienced in RVs, I would seriously consider having a certified RV tech give it a look. Might cost you a few bucks, but it could save you a bunch. There are recalls out on a few of the components, that should be addressed. Check into that.
Good luck and welcome to the friendliest site on the 'net.

I have always liked the Jayco Designer series and sounds like your's is in good shape and should be a good unit for you for years to come.

I agree that the tires are one big concern if they are original, one other thing to do is have the wheel bearings packed just in case they have not been done in awhile. I take mine apart and do them every other year and also give them a shot of grease through the bearing buddies (if your's is equipped with these) on the year between re-packing.

Good luck and enjoy your 5th wheel!
