Hi Everyone. Well, after 15 years the RV-Dreams Community Forum is coming to an end. Since it began in August 2005, we've had 58 Million page views, 124,000 posts, and we've spent about $15,000 to keep this valuable resource for RVers free and open. But since we are now off the road and have settled down for the next chapter of our lives, we are taking the Forum down effective June 30, 2021. It has been a tough decision, but it is now time.

We want to thank all of our members for their participation and input over the years, and we want to especially thank those that have acted as Moderators for us during our amazing journey living and traveling in our RV and growing the RV-Dreams Family. We will be forever proud to have been founders of this Forum and to have been supported by such a wonderful community. Thank you all!!

Our new trailer has a mcrowave convection combination oven.  I have no idea how to use the convection aspect of it, and the directions are completely useless.  It came with a metal rack that has orange plastic tips.  What is this for?  You can't use metal when microwaving, but if it is for convection cooking, won't the rubbery plastic tips melt?  confuse

The convection part is just an electric oven that circulates the hot air. the racks are used to raise the food so the air can circulate. I believe the plastic feet have to be removed, but it would probably be wise to contact the oven manufacturer.

BTW, the convection works really well, you'll love it.

LOL! I still don't have much more of a clue what to do with the convection microwave, then we got a convection oven for the stick house!

One thing that has helped is getting a Convection Oven cookbook - or recipies to try (can find online), which will help you understand what to set it at, etc.
I'd take the plastic thingies off, but save them because they may help when traveling & keep the rack in place :) When using as a microwave, like making popcorn, remove the metal - that still applies.

I'll check in to see if I can learn something too! Good luck!

Well, I cannot tell you how many times I read the book! My oven was missing the racks so I went online and ordered two. There is both an upper and lower for more baking room.(no rubber tips here as my cabinets are lined with carpet). I don't use both racks very often but they double as a cooling rack. I also like how it works after LOTS of trial and error.

So I use regular metal pans for convection baking?

I also have a large Dometic convection microwave combo in my motorhome.  You can use metal pans in the oven but I use pyrex b/c I often combo cook with both with micro and convection at the same time.  Tips on the rack are for this cooking.  I often leave the metal rack in when mirowaving like reheating food or thawing etc.  According to the research I've done you can use aluminum foil or the rack in the oven when microwaving as long as the metal/alum is 2 or more inches from top or sides of the oven to prevent arcing.  Been cooking this way for a couple years w/o any problems, works great.  Hope this helps.

What brand do you have? If you are using convection only you can use any cooking pan with it that you would use in a home oven since that's all a convection oven is. If you use microwave or a mix/combo of convection/microwave (speed cook) then you have to pay attention to the the tray and pan used.

Never used the convection in the trailer, but in the new Class A it is so simple, just by pressing buttons I was able to use it right away. Lots of pre-set recipies, and the manual and cookbook are very helpful. Cooking is so fast in convection; it also has a 'bake' setting with preheat option.
Glass pan for microwaving, metal pan for convection and baking - this oven confirms on screen which pan to use so you don't forget.

Edit for typo

I am still researching our options with regard to which type of RV would best suit our needs.  I came across the Winnebago Adventurer that had a convection oven/microwave combo, a 3-burner range, but no oven.  I would like to hear from you all as to whether or not you think it is important to even have an oven if everything can be cooked/baked in a convection oven/microwave combo or, of course, outside!

Thank you!

Our Mobile Suites does not have an oven, just a convection/microwave.  I've baked several things in it & it works well.  It seems to bake more quickly than a regular oven, so I'm getting used to adjusting my recipes for a shorter cooking time.

I have storage drawers where the oven would be, & I really like having the storage.

We have a convection MW and a gas oven because mainly we didn’t think about it when we ordered the 5er one way or another.  We always had a gas oven in our past rigs so deleting it just didn't come to mind. But we started RVing years before microwaves where even available in homes.

However, in the next rig we will not have a gas oven as we just don’t use it enough - at all.  DW would rather have drawers and she can’t remember the last time she used the gas oven except to store bread.

Now, if you are going to boondock a great deal, then perhaps the gas oven, depending on your cooking style, might be a more important consideration.  But not for us according the Chef.

Those rubbery, plastic thingies may be what keeps the metal rack from touching the sides of the MW.  Our MW has plastic clips that are a part of it that the metal racks just sit on top of.

We don't find a gas oven necessary. But it depends on how strongly you feel about cooking, IMO. We cook everything in our convection oven. Even boondocking, we do not miss the oven....I just cook outside on the gas grill - even baking on it. But for a real baker, the gas oven is likely necessary. But for routine cooking the convection works just fine.

The bigger issue in my mind is the quality of the appliances in an RV. Basically, they are junk. I'd be replacing the RV appliances with residential appliances. JMO.

I have a Frigidaire microwave / convention oven that I used for the first time last night.

It seems very strange to use metal racks when microwaving, but that is what my instruction book states. The oblong rack that sets on clips mounted to the interior walls of oven when microwaving and a round rack (with the plastic on the bottom prongs) for convection oven.

Anyone know if I can use the round convection oven rack WITHOUT the turntable?

smileyes you can .." But"........the turntable assists in even distribution of heat in the food , not using the turntable in the microwave mode can overcook the section of food in the wave path or burn it from the inside out

not using the turntable during Convection only causes the reverse effect because you do not have an even airflow

during convection use you cut your recipe time (conventional oven) by 1/4 and lower your temperature by 25 degrees

Sample:  1hour = 45 min

               350* = 325*

if you are using both micro/conv. at the same time you need to look at the book for timing and temp for the oven you have due to wattage.

hope this helps

Could the plastic things possibly be silicone and heat safe?

they are heat safe and need to be there so you dont create arcing between the metals during microwaving

Note: keeping food debri off the feet and off the plastic insulators that hold up the shelf will go a long way in keeping problems down with the microwave.....if food particles and spills are in the cavity they will heat everytime the microwave is used this can cause corrosion in the wave guide tunnel and cause failure of the magtube

Grams, We have the Frigidare microwave convection oven and I'm still struggling with it. We've read and reread the book. However I do know that you don't use the oblong metal rack while microwaving only while baking. Not sure about the micro/bake setting. The feet on the round metal rack are silicone and used on the turntable for baking in smaller pans that can revolve as Mike said. Kim, not sure what brand you have?

I like to bake and find this convection oven much different than the one that was in our S & B, which baked perfectly. I find I have to increase bake times in the Frigidare and if using an oblong pan I get dark spots on food while baking and have to rotate the pan which doesn't work for cakes. Preheating then entering the baking time is an issue with our Frigidare is a problem we haven't resolved. Guess I'll call their customer service.

Because we have generous pantry space with an appliance shelf I took our Breville convection oven that toasts, bakes, broils exceptionally well but doesn't hold a 9 x 12 pan and the Breville doesn't take up counter space.

when using convection oven you must use a rack so air circulation from the fans can envelope the item being cooked and evenly distribute the heat........

Mike, you're right. When I indicated dark spots I was referring to the area on the right side (facing the oven) where the fan is to circulate the air. Comes out pretty hot, hence the dark areas on baked goods.

Sherry, I'm TOTALLY confused! On page 8 of my instruction manual it states the oblong rack is for microwaving and the round rack with silicone feet is for convection use. I tried to post a link to the manual on-line, but I don't know how!

Manual

The only thing I'm sure about now is that per Lucky Mike ... i am NOT going to remove the turn table. The book said to only remove the turn table when cleaning, but I didn't want to listen to that part! :)

the round rack with silicone feet is needed during convection to keep the food elevated so the airflow is even all the way around the food.

the oblong rack you will notice it has either plastic insulator guards on it or the mounting inside the microwave itself......it is designed with rounded edging and spacing so that it does not absorb or direct the microwaves..(hence no sparks)  racking during microwaving is great when you are adding several Items, but due to the size of a microwave cavity.. is almost impractical....just the added length of cooking time and cold spots makes you pull it out and hide it in the cabinet

Tammy,

Below is a link to the "Forum Tips" category of the forums where I created a thread explaining how to create a link in the body of a forum post.  I know that the instructions might be confusing, so if you can't figure it out, try another tact and that is to just copy the url address at the online source where your manual is and paste it into the body of the forum post.  Since I have to read every post as a part of my moderating duties, I tend to then take those pasted url addresses and make them an active link for the users.

Inserting Links into Forum Posts

The only concern with copying and pasting links into the body of the message is that on occasion, those links can be extremely long.  When they get that way, they cause the forum page to widen to the point that readers have to scroll back and forth to read the text.  Then, when I get to the moderating, I then shorten the link and make it active.

Not to pick on Lucky Mike, but I do his all the time.  No big deal except that with changes at work and my access to internet, I usually only do my moderating in the evening, so until I can "activate" a link, everyone else would just have to copy your url address from the body of the forum and look it up themselves using their browser.

So, with all that said, copy your url to the manual and go back to your post where you tried to do the link.  Then, use the "More" button in the upper right of your post and choose "Edit Post."  After editing, then click the "Submit" button.  That will then let you paste your url address in the body of that message and I'll get it activated later.

Terry

EDIT:  Moderator goofed up and forget to put in the link to the "Links" thread.  It is now in the body of the message above.

Grams and Mike,

I stand corrected (not the first time 😄)! I was told in a recent kitchen demonstration that the oblong rack was for baking only. The oblong rack is for microwave cooking as well! On page 17, the manual also says "always use the shelf (oblong rack) when convection cooking" for best results. I
Oops, sorry I confused you Grams!

Terry , I will try to figure out how to post links. Thanks for the info ! Sherry, I'm easily confused. Think nothing of it! Why do they make this so difficult ??? You would think somewhere the book would state the shelf is micro-safe! Thinks!!!

First of all, I apologize for forgetting to insert the link to the forum thread about inserting links into the forum.  I've since gone back and edited myself to add it in my previous comment.  Sorry if that mistake on my part confused you any.

I did a generic search or Frigidaire microwave and convection oven manuals.  On Frigidaire's website, they listed 3 different microwaves that were combination microwave/convection ovens.  Looking under "Support" they have manuals available online and all three of those models linked to the exact same manual.  So, as a benefit for you, I'll post the link here and let you take your time in learning to link.  I found a reference to the round rack on page 11 of the manual, other references on page 18 and 19, but I found nothing on the oval rack.  However, I did a pretty quick scan of the manual, so I could have easily missed something.  Maybe someone else can look at the manual and give us a better answer.

We have a convection/microwave oven in our Motorhome. I was totally intimidated by it at first. I decided it wouldnot defeat me. Gradually, I am learning to bake in it. The more I use it the less intimidating it is.

My DW now fix's biscuits and they look and taste like they came from the oven. Pour a little cane syrup on them and yummy.
