Hi Everyone. Well, after 15 years the RV-Dreams Community Forum is coming to an end. Since it began in August 2005, we've had 58 Million page views, 124,000 posts, and we've spent about $15,000 to keep this valuable resource for RVers free and open. But since we are now off the road and have settled down for the next chapter of our lives, we are taking the Forum down effective June 30, 2021. It has been a tough decision, but it is now time.
We want to thank all of our members for their participation and input over the years, and we want to especially thank those that have acted as Moderators for us during our amazing journey living and traveling in our RV and growing the RV-Dreams Family. We will be forever proud to have been founders of this Forum and to have been supported by such a wonderful community. Thank you all!!
Hey there, we have a motorhome right now but we have a family member who wants to get us a trailer that will be bigger and better. We got kinda swindled with the one we have now, it needs work, it is easier just to get something else...but, I'm worried about how we're going to move a trailer.
We have a very small car that certainly wouldn't work. We're actually planning on getting rid of our car. Is it possible to tow it with a small motorhome? I'd be able to afford a small used motorhome just for the purpose of towing a trailer, if that works. From what I've seen looking at ads on craigslist it seems like some of them can, but I'm not really sure, any experience with this?
The trailer is probably a 32 footer, if I'm not mistaken.
I am presuming a lot here, but is the 32' trailer you are talking about a travel trailer and not a utility trailer? In eiither case, you will need to have a towing vehicle that is rated to tow a trailer in reference to the trailer's weight AND the combined weight of both the tow vehicle and trailer, including all the fuel, other liquids, propane, cargo, passengers and everything that will be hauled in the trailer.
Small motorhomes will certainly be limited in having the weight capacity to tow a trailer as big or bigger than the motorhome. A motorhome big enough to handle the weight of the trailer (if there is one big enough) will create another problem in regards to the combined length of the tow vehicle and trailer.
So, you will need to decide that if you need more room for more people, you may be better to consider either a bigger motorhome or a trailer (travel trailer or fifth wheel) and pickup big enough to handle the weight of that trailer and truck.
In regards to trailers, you will need to know the GVWR (Gross Vehcile Weight Ratint) which is the weight of the trailer with all liquids, groceries, clothes, and other stuff (including accessory items). The truck will have two weights listed that you need to know. Those are the GVWR of the truck (what it can legally carry) and GCVW (Gross Combined Vehicle Weight) which is the TOTAL weights of both the truck and trailer.
Good luck with your research and planning. Also, welcome to the forums.
Terry

Thank you, this all seems so silly when I thought about it. I guess I just really want to have a motorhome, but we're getting a trailer. Maybe I could get a toterhome when we're ready to get on the road.
My MH has a 10,000 lb. tow hitch. Not that I know much about TT's, but I would think being limited to stay under 10k is going to be a small trailer. My Jeep is almost 5k lbs. So I don't think using a MH to tow a TT is a good idea.
