Hi Everyone. Well, after 15 years the RV-Dreams Community Forum is coming to an end. Since it began in August 2005, we've had 58 Million page views, 124,000 posts, and we've spent about $15,000 to keep this valuable resource for RVers free and open. But since we are now off the road and have settled down for the next chapter of our lives, we are taking the Forum down effective June 30, 2021. It has been a tough decision, but it is now time.

We want to thank all of our members for their participation and input over the years, and we want to especially thank those that have acted as Moderators for us during our amazing journey living and traveling in our RV and growing the RV-Dreams Family. We will be forever proud to have been founders of this Forum and to have been supported by such a wonderful community. Thank you all!!

Electric Brake Controls

I have a couple of questions about the electric brake controllers. First, which controller do you all consider to be the better ones to use. Second, I have one in my truck now, if I get a new one do they generally hook up the same way or do they come with different connectors that need new wiring?

Thanks for your help, I really appreciate it.

Michael,

You will get different answers here, as some have used different ones.  One name that comes to mind is Prodigy (I think) that has been mentioned as a good brand.  I can't help much with questions as our Ford F450 came with an integrated brake controller that works with our coach.  We did have to add a Carslile part (called an HBA-CAM) to make that integrated brake controller work with the coach's electric-over-hydraulic disk brakes.

You could also use the search function of the forum and type in specific terms.  You may get a long thread with only a few mentions of controllers (or whatever your searched topic is), but some may be absolutely loaded with the information you need.

Good luck with the research.

Terry

Mike, when you buy your brake control, they will almost positively have a wiring adaptor kit for your specific vehicle.  When I installed the Prodigy in my TV, I got a wiring harness specific for Ford Superduty.  Honestly, it was plug and play.  The hardest part was mounting the controller in a spot that was reasonably easy to reach.

I have a Prodigy P3. It does excatly what it is designed to do. I had it installed only because the hitch was being installed and I had no time after to do it myself. 53 Merc is right in the the hardest part was mounting location. Dealer had installed it on the veryh bottom of dash where I had to reach a long wayh for it. I moved it to closer reach. Most trucks are equiped with a connector behind dash that mates up to controller. So with an appropriate wiring harness, it is easy to do. Installation should not take more than 30 minutes.

I've never had to manualy hit the emergency switch on controller while in traffic, but I do test that each time I pull out of a site just to know it is working.
