Hi Everyone. Well, after 15 years the RV-Dreams Community Forum is coming to an end. Since it began in August 2005, we've had 58 Million page views, 124,000 posts, and we've spent about $15,000 to keep this valuable resource for RVers free and open. But since we are now off the road and have settled down for the next chapter of our lives, we are taking the Forum down effective June 30, 2021. It has been a tough decision, but it is now time.

We want to thank all of our members for their participation and input over the years, and we want to especially thank those that have acted as Moderators for us during our amazing journey living and traveling in our RV and growing the RV-Dreams Family. We will be forever proud to have been founders of this Forum and to have been supported by such a wonderful community. Thank you all!!

Any Quilters?

Just wondering if any of the fulltiming ladies (or guys, I guess) are quilters and if so, what kind of quilting and how do you store your stuff? Any innovative ideas you'd care to share?!?

We cleared the built-in cabinetry out of the center of our back bunkroom (which has slideouts on both sides) and use one of the bunks as space for storage and rubberware drawers which contain supplies, patterns, kits, office supplies, and the like.  The half bath room we don't really use, so that currently holds my fabric stash.  And we hung a pegboard over that door for rulers, scissors, rotary cutters and the like.

Denise :)

My wife is a quilter. We are planning on a mod that will replace the couch with a sewing center. Not sure what it will look like yet. That project will get started after Labor Day. We will no longer need the couch bed after that. If you would like to chat with my wife let me konw. I can PM you her email or you could do same with your email.

The Brideandjoy quilts part of why we don't want any of the fireplace type add ons to the fifth wheel she uses the table and the extension to the counter top for her sewing and ironing. She does piece quilting and applique both. When she's done with the tops she sets up her Ulmer travel frame to do hand quilting on or uses the machine to quilt on the table.

I have my machine set up in the bedroom on a small desk and I use my kitchen counter and table top to cut. I store in one half of the 5er width closet in the bedroom and also under the bed. Besides that I just try to keep the amount of material coming into the 5er under control. (Very hard to do. I LOVE material). I want to get a quilting frame that I can store in the closet too.

Hi Vicky!  When you say bedroom, do you mean your master bedroom?!  Or a back bedroom?  I so understand what you mean about fabric.  I do so love fabric!  I have a nice pvc quilting frame that's about 2' X 3' that breaks down when it's not in use, as well as a 22" standing hoop that I love.  Both are nice for smaller spaces.  Thanks so much for sharing with me!

Denise :)

Yes Denise. I keep it in my master bedroom. (the only one I have). I find it easy to sew in the 5er - the biggest difference is that I have to keep things neater. I used to just spread out over my sewing room and just close the door when I left. Now I have to keep the sewing stuff under control. Very hard to do but as there is just no way I can go without sewing something I just have to work on it. I also find myself avoiding Joannes. I just can't go into that store without buying something.

That PVC quilting frame you have sounds like the one I want. Would the standing hoop also work for cross stitch?

Hi Denise. I am Carol, Jerry's wife. I quilt, crochet, & embroider (by hand and machine). I am in the process of clearing out my craft room and deciding what I want to keep to take with me, what to store here at the house and what to get rid of. I am working on the plans for the craft center in our 5er. I am sure that we will be posting pics when we get to work on it. It is really tough to thin out 30 years of stuff.

Vicky, I completely understand what you mean about staying out of JoAnn's -- they are filled with things I *need*! LOL! Okay, so not really, and if I don't go in there, I stay safe.

Here's a link to a standing hoop that's similar to what I have. The legs fit nicely under the sofa, and the neck angles up and over, so it's in my lap, and hands free. Then when I'm not using it, it folds up relatively flat, which is also very nice. I would imagine that it could work for cross stitch -- and they make the hoops as small as 14" if I'm remembering correctly.

Carol, it's nice to meet you! I had the luxury of living full-time in our RV for the first year as we decided what was important to keep and what could be left behind. It's such a personal decision and I imagine it can vary radically from full-timer to full-timer. And on top of that, we found that our lifestyle changed quite a bit when we made the move, so some items we thought were going to be very important turned out to be useless. We traded out a lot of things back and forth from our home before we finally settled. Since we're stationary for the time being, I know we probably still have a bit more "stuff" than we'll actually carry when we hit the road. And I'm constantly 'purging' things that we've not used.

That being said, I held onto a lot of my quilting/crafting stuff and I'm enjoying taking a LOT of time using it up and then weeding it out! It helps, like I said above, when I stay out of JoAnn's!

Good morning ladies

I cannot count the number of times I tried to thin out my crafting supplies. I would enter my overstuffed sewing room with a couple of big green garbage bads and full of determination. One hour later I would exit with a small walmart bag with maybe 2 pieces of material to toss. I just couldn't clear anything out. I needed it all!!!!

Carol I look forward to seeing pictures of your crafting center in your 5er. Maybe you will have some ideas that I can use to sort and store stuff.

I also keep a bag of yarn and a crochet hook in the TV. When we are driving I work on afghans. Eventually I am going to have a boat load of them. But it keeps my hands busy when we are on the road.

I used to spend a lot of time in a store called Fabricland. It is mostly on the west coast of Canada. I should be a major shareholder if not outright owner of that store by now. I sew a lot of medieval clothing so most stuff I make takes yardage. It was nothing to go in and spend $200.00 at one go.

Vicky
