Hi Everyone. Well, after 15 years the RV-Dreams Community Forum is coming to an end. Since it began in August 2005, we've had 58 Million page views, 124,000 posts, and we've spent about $15,000 to keep this valuable resource for RVers free and open. But since we are now off the road and have settled down for the next chapter of our lives, we are taking the Forum down effective June 30, 2021. It has been a tough decision, but it is now time.
We want to thank all of our members for their participation and input over the years, and we want to especially thank those that have acted as Moderators for us during our amazing journey living and traveling in our RV and growing the RV-Dreams Family. We will be forever proud to have been founders of this Forum and to have been supported by such a wonderful community. Thank you all!!
My question is how difficult is it to replace a dinette with a free-standing table and chairs (in a used motorhome)? My husband and I are just window shopping right now. I definitely prefer a free-standing table. We're not as young as we used to be and the bench style seats are more difficult for us. I've seen a lot of models I really like that are equipped with a dinette. What I believe I'd really like is one of those desk units with the table that slides out. Anyone have experience changing them out?
Pam, I assume you are referring to a booth type dinette, every unit is different therefore the removal will be specific to the unit. The most basic booths have storage underneath, you will be replacing this storage with free standing chairs, there will be a memory on the floor of the old booth, Holes, missing flooring, Etc....it's doable, but don't expect to make it happen in an hour.....
As Gene said, it might not be easy. Also, be aware that some dinettes cover a furnace, wheel wells, water tanks, etc. Just look carefully befor jumping at a particular unit. It can be done, but it may take some ingenuity.
One of our Travel Trailers, the booth type dinnette covered the wheel well on one side. The seats could have been removed and a table and two chairs could have been used. We used the booth mostly for food prep since it was directly across from the stove and sink.
We had another pull up table and seating at the front of the trailer that was a combination of dinnette and main bed. We'd use that table for eating.
However, 99% of the time we would eat outside at a table and folding chairs. We'd only eat inside if it was very cold.
If your dinnette can be removed and doesn't cover tanks or heaters here's an option as a replacement for a desk and table. http://www.amazingmagictable.com/twodesk.htm
In our current 5th wheel, we replaced our free standing dining table with this desk and table and reused two of our chairs. If we need more chairs we carry a couple of folding chairs we can add to the table.
The desk/table works out well and allows flexibilty to arrange it for different duties, work, craft, dining, socilaizing...etc.

Thank you. I had found that website from a much earlier post. That is exactly what I want!!!! I have looked at a few RVs online that come equipeed that way. Would you mind if I asked about the price range? I don't think there is any indication on the website. Thanks for the comment about eating outside too. Sometimes I need to be reminded that this is a more casual lifestyle. . .
I don't remember the price...I just remember it was more than I would have paid (DW gets to make the decisions) and it was cheaper than if I had spent a couple of weekends building it from scratch. So I didn't put up much of a fight when she decided we were going to buy it.
The shipping cost was more than I liked. I do remember that. If you can pick it up or find something locally, that would be the way to go.

If you go back to Miller's website to the page that shows the desk/table, scroll down the page to the Pricing & Shipping link. It gives all the prices for their items.
Hi there, I am looking to trade free standing chairs with a dinette set. I don't know if you have found anything yet, but I also have a magic table that converts from a coffee table to a reg. table with two side leafs that come up depnding on the width you want. If there's any chance you have gotten something that you want to get rid of, let me know.
Hope you are enjoying whatever you have regardless!
