Hi Everyone. Well, after 15 years the RV-Dreams Community Forum is coming to an end. Since it began in August 2005, we've had 58 Million page views, 124,000 posts, and we've spent about $15,000 to keep this valuable resource for RVers free and open. But since we are now off the road and have settled down for the next chapter of our lives, we are taking the Forum down effective June 30, 2021. It has been a tough decision, but it is now time.

We want to thank all of our members for their participation and input over the years, and we want to especially thank those that have acted as Moderators for us during our amazing journey living and traveling in our RV and growing the RV-Dreams Family. We will be forever proud to have been founders of this Forum and to have been supported by such a wonderful community. Thank you all!!

Carrier AC

I just dodged a bullet & thought I'd write this to help others maybe dodge the same one.

Recently, our 2 year old Carrier air conditioner (15,000BTU low profile rooftop unit) on our 5ver went on the blink. It would turn on, run & cool for a few minutes, then after ~5 minutes, groan loudly, trip the breaker and stop. It would repeat this time after time.

Not wanting to break camp to take it to a dealer, I called a "mobile RV tech" who came out ($60 site visit fee!), checked a couple things & informed me that my compressor "was dead" and because it is a "sealed system", could not be repaired. "The whole ac unit needs to be replaced." A couple days later he sent me a quote for $1500 for a new one, installed. He of course explained that he had a PhD in RV repair science and that he knew everything and more about everything. I almost gave him the go-ahead.

In the process, I also learned that Carrier has gotten out of the RV AC market and no longer makes them. Being annoyed that my 2 years old AC was dead (warranty expired) already, I called them to gripe. Long story short, after explaining the details of the problem, it turns out to only be a fan motor that was dead & was easily replaceable. After haggling for a while, they conceded to send me one at no charge despite the warranty being expired. I just received it, installed it myself in about an hour, and now the ac unit works fine.

I got the feeling when talking to the technical guy at Carrier that mine wasn't the first fan motor to go, it seemed a familiar topic to him.

So.....here that moral of the story - if you have a Carrier AC unit (as very many of us do) and the unit runs cool for a few minutes, then pops a circuit breaker - it may be the outside fan (not the one that blows the cools air inside the unit). To diagnose it, climb up and see if the fan is running when the compressor is running - it should be. If not its probably the fan motor which can be easily replaced. Finding parts will become more challenging but there are dealers with remaining stock.

I hope this saves someone 1500 bucks!

Great tip. We live in a time where we must depend on recommendation from people we trust. Unfortunately reputable service people are difficult to find.

We had a similar experience with a mobile RV serviceman.  Out tail lights weren't working when we first got our camper and we thought it would be better to have someone come to fix it rather than drive without tail lights.  He spent over an hour under the camper and decided the whole thing needed to be rewired.  We paid him waaaay too much for his opinion and time . . . then we decided to take it in to someone else who fixed the prob for next to nothing.  That guy's name is James Bond (love it!) and he is someone who knows what he's doing and doesn't take advantage of your need to get something fixed.

What a wonderful business it would be for someone to provide reliable mobile service.  I'm sure they are out there, but we won't use any service like that until someone highly recommends them.

There is a website you can access for RV Service. Go to www.rvservicereviews.com and search by state and area (city). There you will find all manner of personal reviews of RV service.
We found a jewel in Scio, OR once, just by pure dumb luck. Like you, charged what I thought was a bargain price and did excellent work.
