Hi Everyone. Well, after 15 years the RV-Dreams Community Forum is coming to an end. Since it began in August 2005, we've had 58 Million page views, 124,000 posts, and we've spent about $15,000 to keep this valuable resource for RVers free and open. But since we are now off the road and have settled down for the next chapter of our lives, we are taking the Forum down effective June 30, 2021. It has been a tough decision, but it is now time.

We want to thank all of our members for their participation and input over the years, and we want to especially thank those that have acted as Moderators for us during our amazing journey living and traveling in our RV and growing the RV-Dreams Family. We will be forever proud to have been founders of this Forum and to have been supported by such a wonderful community. Thank you all!!

Buying an RV out of State

When you buy an RV in another state other than your own do you have to register it in that state?

No, you should be able to get a temp plate to return it to your state. You may have sales tax questions though. I think it varies by state.

In our case, we were issued a temporary permit for Florida that was good for, I think, 30 days.

Before that expired, we were able to register the RV in South Dakota. Check with the selling dealer or state and the state you are going to register it in. They should be able to help.

We purchased from owner in NC, used his plates and bill of sale to return to Idaho. Payed sales tax when we registered in Idaho. Mailed plates back to seller.

We only WISHED we could. Bought ours in MT and had to drive 10 hrs. to ND--pay the sales tax, liscense, and registration.

We live in Cumberland Center, Maine just a short distance from Portland and found a unit we wanted just outside of Portland, Oregon. Now that's a meaningful distance away for sure.  Condo went under contract this afternoon.

Both we and the private seller agreed to use a RV dealer to do a pre-delivery inspection of both the 5th wheel and tow vehicle to our specifications. The dealer then handled all the paperwork to transfer title to our name and shipped UPS Priority Over Night the necessary documents to pay sales taxes and registration fees to the State of Maine. My choice to remain a resident of my home state at least for the time being. We have already shipped boxes of clothing and other necessities to the dealership via UPS and they will be awaiting our arrival. I will either UPS or hand carry the two registrations and plates and will be ready to travel (fully insured) following our orientation to our new home.

We fly from Portland, Maine to Portland, Oregon on Tuesday March 1st to begin our new lifestyle. Our only specific appointment is to attend the RV-Dreams Tennessee Rally in mid April. Then we'll visit family and friends on the way North to enjoy the warm summer months at our log cabin deep into the mountains of western Maine.

Next winter.....sunshine!!!       smile

If the state is a neighboring state, you might inquire about the taxes. I know Ohio and Indiana have an agreement that if you purchase in Indiana, the dealer will charge Ohio sales tax and some will even take care of the registration. We bought our first two campers this way. We have been told that most state that share borders usually have this type of agreement.

When we purchased our current unit in Maryland, we had to pay Ohio sales tax at the time we registered it in Ohio. Just had to sign a sales tax waiver in Maryland and provide copies of our Ohio Drivers License showing we were Ohio Residents. Then the dealer gave us 30 day temporary Maryland plate.

Speedy, we purchased our new rig in Ohio.  It came with a temporary tag good for 3 or 4 weeks.  We did not have to pay sales tax  to Ohio but we did with Texas.  I  called the county tax people in LIvingston TX  and she mailed  me a packet that explained how to determine my costs and sales tax.  Mailed it back wih a check and got my plates  a week later.  In fact I  figured wrong and was $5.60 short but they sent  the plates anyway and asked me to reimburse them.
