Hi Everyone. Well, after 15 years the RV-Dreams Community Forum is coming to an end. Since it began in August 2005, we've had 58 Million page views, 124,000 posts, and we've spent about $15,000 to keep this valuable resource for RVers free and open. But since we are now off the road and have settled down for the next chapter of our lives, we are taking the Forum down effective June 30, 2021. It has been a tough decision, but it is now time.

We want to thank all of our members for their participation and input over the years, and we want to especially thank those that have acted as Moderators for us during our amazing journey living and traveling in our RV and growing the RV-Dreams Family. We will be forever proud to have been founders of this Forum and to have been supported by such a wonderful community. Thank you all!!

Caution for Cold Weather

Well, since global warming is really.....

oh, wait.....

.....since it is colder than normal in many places, I have a caution for any of you that haven't experienced this yet.

If you are in a situation in cold, wet weather and you find your windshield wipers frozen to the windshield, DO NOT LIFT THEM UP TO SCRAPE THE ICE OFF OF YOUR WINDSHIELD.  Let the defroster warm them up to the point that you can lift them without any resistance at all.  Then, you can lift them and scrape off the ice.

When we left work yesterday, our Mercury Mariner (remember that name) windows were somewhat iced over with some snow on the windows as well.  Not finding our ice scraper, I started wiping off the snow with my glove to clear them for better "warm-up" and clearing.  Jo decided to work on the front windshield.

Now, I've been a professional driver in my past and I knew to not lift the wiper blades.  I guess I never imparted that little tidbit of wisdom to Jo.  Anyway, we now have two (yep, both) windshield wipers that are completely ruined because the part of the wiper that was frozen to the windshield tore off of the blade.

Today, I checked with a couple of parts houses.  One told me the wiper blades were about $20 EACH.  The other couldn't even find the blades on his computer.   I feel WHIPPED UP ON!!!

So, kindly learn from our experiences and let the windshield warm up to free the blades.

Terry

Another option is if your windshield wipers can be raise the night before then leave them in the raised position. Terry is correct the the defrosters is probably the best solution. Terry you might want to check Wal Mart for the wipers. I buy all my wipers at Wal Mart and they sell the size for my Freightliner and the wiper for GM Truck look the same as factory.. Part houses are alway expensive in my opinion. Good Luck.....

I have an old blanket that I will throw over the windshield if snow or ice is predicted.

Not yet traveling in full time mode. Having said that, it is my plan to follow the good weather. I am also a realist and realize this may not always be possible. The freeze of '10 set new records in Corpus Christi. For folks experienced living in the frozen north, this you tube video should be a hoot.

I grew up in Lincoln, Nebraska. My first teaching position, back in 1971, was in Houston. One day we got a bit of freezing rain, and I was the last one to leave school because I was the ONLY one with an ice scraper. I used to run around in short sleeves when the temperature was in the 50's, and the kids were wearing parkas.

Terry,

I've vowed never to be in that situation again but, I sympathize with you. Been there, done that, but (hopefully) never again. :)

I have an RV home ... I can move my RV home to warmer climates!
