Hi Everyone. Well, after 15 years the RV-Dreams Community Forum is coming to an end. Since it began in August 2005, we've had 58 Million page views, 124,000 posts, and we've spent about $15,000 to keep this valuable resource for RVers free and open. But since we are now off the road and have settled down for the next chapter of our lives, we are taking the Forum down effective June 30, 2021. It has been a tough decision, but it is now time.


We want to thank all of our members for their participation and input over the years, and we want to especially thank those that have acted as Moderators for us during our amazing journey living and traveling in our RV and growing the RV-Dreams Family. We will be forever proud to have been founders of this Forum and to have been supported by such a wonderful community. Thank you all!!

Okay, I was looking online at dealer in my state over the weekend and found the following:

2004 Ford Super Duty F-350 King Ranch Truck Crew Cab Long Bed 4x4

6.0L Turbo Diesel, 53,500 Miles, Dually, Tow Package, 12v Power Outlet, etc.

They want $25,990 for this.

What I don't know from the site is the gear ratio which would help me determine towing capacity.  Without knowing that, I realize it's near impossible to get the tow rating, payload capacity and the GCVR for it. 

Just wondering, for those out there towing with a similar vehicle, what is the ballpark figures for Tow, Payload and GCVR on this type of vehicle.

As a Dually it should be a 4.3. 

Of more concern is the 2004 6.0 the first couple of years on the 6.0 were not good they had / have a tendancy to start eating injectors at around 70,000 miles I'd want to run that VIN through Oasis (edit Oasis is Fords service data base there are places on the net where you can put in the VIN and get a report) and see what if any work has been done under the warranty.  Based on the timing it looks like whoever is selling it is selling it at the end of the 5 year 100K time frames so I'd really want to know what he had Ford do to it.

Wasn't sure when the problems started with the Fords Diesel and honestly didn't even think about it. Good call.

They have a few 2006/7 models to look over also in the 30-35K range. Doesn't hurt to look though and I appreciate the input.

Gary,

Don't rule out a Ford F450.  In October of 2009, we ran across a used 2008 Ford F450 King Ranch listed as $36,000.  We ended up getting it for $30,000.  It has the 6.4L with 4:88 rear end, so it easily pulls our Mobile Suites.  While our Mobile Suites isn't filled up to the 18,500 lbs GVWR, the F450 almost doesn't even know anything is behind it.

Primarily though, the F450 could be more than you need, depending on the GVWR of your RV.

Here is some info from Wikipedia about the 6.0L.
6.0 Power Stroke

The 6.0 L Power Stroke with a variable-vane turbo was phased in starting in 2003; this engine produced 325 horsepower (242 kW) and 560 foot-pounds force (760 N·m) of torque. The 6.0 L 32-valve pushrod-actuated Power Stroke single-turbo diesel was modified in 2005, boosting torque to 570 ft·lbf (770 N·m), but power remained the same as the previous version with 325 horsepower (242 kW). Due to very high warranty exposure and over 500 vehicle full buybacks (due to the Barneys Law), late 2006 was the last of the 6.0 L diesels. The major problem with the Navistar diesel engines is due to damage resulting from defective fuel injectors. There were also minor problems resulting from the unreliable factory variable-vane turbocharger, EGR valve carbon deposit clogging/sticking, defective Exhaust Pressure (EP) sensor/connector, extensive PCM recalibrations, fuel injector harness chafing/crushing, general engine stalling/bucking, and inability to conform to the new federal diesel emissions standards of January 1, 2007.
