Hi Everyone. Well, after 15 years the RV-Dreams Community Forum is coming to an end. Since it began in August 2005, we've had 58 Million page views, 124,000 posts, and we've spent about $15,000 to keep this valuable resource for RVers free and open. But since we are now off the road and have settled down for the next chapter of our lives, we are taking the Forum down effective June 30, 2021. It has been a tough decision, but it is now time.

We want to thank all of our members for their participation and input over the years, and we want to especially thank those that have acted as Moderators for us during our amazing journey living and traveling in our RV and growing the RV-Dreams Family. We will be forever proud to have been founders of this Forum and to have been supported by such a wonderful community. Thank you all!!

Toilet Seats

Yes, I know it's not everyone's favourite subject, nor is it a subject of profound importance but ... I have a rant.

Why is it that these RV/marine toilets (mine is a Thetford) have two totally inaccessible plastic bolt/nut systems to attach the seat and lid to the commode itself. I have to try and tighten them at least once a week and it's, excuse the pun, a pain in the arse! You have to get on the floor and grope behind the commode, somehow locate those plastic nuts, and then, using very dextrous movements, try and get them tightened.

Can't they come up with a more stable, lockable, system that will not constantly work loose all the time ... so that the seat and lid don't slide sideways after about a week of use?

no

Thoughts, comments, more puns, and real suggestions welcome!

Paul

If you check the top above the bolt, you should see a hinged cover that can be lifted. Then a screw driver can be used to tighten the nuts from above. That's not just RV toilets, it's pretty much standard.

Thanks Fred ... just seems so simple but, not an item they talk about in the "maintenance" manual.

Thanks for the response.

You might consider installing an additonal nut on each side to act as a lock nut. That is if there is enough thread showing. This might help with your weekly problem.

I got rid of the cheap toilet seat with plastic nuts and bought a residential grade seat and it solved the problem for me.

I replaced mine with brass bolts and wingnuts instead of the plastic ones.   I took in one of the plastic ones and we matched them up exactly.

Ace Hardware had them although you'd be able to get them at most hardware stores.

The brass can be tightened well and won't corrode over time.

Best Regards!
