Hi Everyone. Well, after 15 years the RV-Dreams Community Forum is coming to an end. Since it began in August 2005, we've had 58 Million page views, 124,000 posts, and we've spent about $15,000 to keep this valuable resource for RVers free and open. But since we are now off the road and have settled down for the next chapter of our lives, we are taking the Forum down effective June 30, 2021. It has been a tough decision, but it is now time.
We want to thank all of our members for their participation and input over the years, and we want to especially thank those that have acted as Moderators for us during our amazing journey living and traveling in our RV and growing the RV-Dreams Family. We will be forever proud to have been founders of this Forum and to have been supported by such a wonderful community. Thank you all!!
We're preparing to conclude our full-timing chapter after a wonderful 2 year tour of the US with our kids. We want to downsize our 5th wheel to a less bulky size and also are willing to downgrade the amenities for the more limited use of a vacation rig.
Any experiences with trade in's at dealers to downsize? Should we plan to sell it ourselves and then shop for our lesser rig?
Any time you insert another party in the buy / sell arrangement the price has to be adjusted for that party.
If you sell to a dealer you get less and if you buy from a dealer you pay more. To a lot of people that is OK though, to avoid the additional work of selling yourself, ie advertising, showing, paper work, etc. The same on the buying side, dealer prep, warranty, etc.
On the flip side though, there can be considerable profit to be enjoyed by selling your self and buying privately.
Sell it yourself! Dealer will want retail for his unit but will only offer wholesale for your unit. I never trade any big ticket items and have never had any problems selling my stuff. I don't usually buy anything from dealers due to the sales tax, private party sales have no sales tax here in AZ and back in SC. Not the same in all states though.

Alabama has sales tax on private sales, but, vehicles excepted, they rarely ever get the sales tax money, because they can't identify it. Vehicles, however, must be titled, and they collect the sales tax then, unless you can prove that you've already paid it.
To stay on topic, no one should ever do a trade-in. Depending on the value of the two items, you will lose hundreds or thousands of dollars on the deal. It's no big deal to put a listing on Craigslist to sell anything, and there is little or no cost to do so.
