Hi Everyone. Well, after 15 years the RV-Dreams Community Forum is coming to an end. Since it began in August 2005, we've had 58 Million page views, 124,000 posts, and we've spent about $15,000 to keep this valuable resource for RVers free and open. But since we are now off the road and have settled down for the next chapter of our lives, we are taking the Forum down effective June 30, 2021. It has been a tough decision, but it is now time.

We want to thank all of our members for their participation and input over the years, and we want to especially thank those that have acted as Moderators for us during our amazing journey living and traveling in our RV and growing the RV-Dreams Family. We will be forever proud to have been founders of this Forum and to have been supported by such a wonderful community. Thank you all!!

Traveling in Canada

We are full time wantabes. Just put our house on the market. We will be spending at least a month in Canada this summer. My questions are:

1) Cell phone service & cost. What providers do you all use, what is the fee for out of country & how good is the service?

2) What about internet & using skype for contact with family?

We have elderly parents & children with 6 grandkids in Florida, so we need to be able to be in touch.

We have been reading a lot of your posts & find this the most helpful RV site we have come across. Looking forward to hearing from fellow RVers & maybe hooking up somewhere down the road.

We used Verizon's North American plan and had phone service all through Canada, no additional fees. We use Hughes/Datastorm for internet and it worked till we got way north on our way to Alaska, then stopped. We had to switch satellites when we got up there. We don't use Skype, so can't comment.

Skype works great in Canada. We use it all the time talking with our kids who are in Canada.....and I've used it for business calls when we were there for several weeks this spring and summer and the campground had free WiFi. Verizon also let us add Canada to our family plan for $20/month. No extra charges for calls from Canada (as long as you were within your monthly minute allowance). Took it off once we crossed south of the boarder.

We spent a couple months in Canada last summer and found WiFi in most places that we stayed.  We sometimes had to pay for it and sometimes is was somewhat poor service, but we were never out of touch with our family.  We were not using Skype at the time.  We did not add "free or unlimited" Canadian service to our cell phones as we did not want to change the Verizon plan that we have (its an old one and really great for us but is no longer offered and if we change it, we loose it) but we always had our phones turned on so that we could recieve calls -- which we did on occasion and the extra charges for those few minutes were not that great overall.  E-mail was our main contact during our trip.
