Hi Everyone. Well, after 15 years the RV-Dreams Community Forum is coming to an end. Since it began in August 2005, we've had 58 Million page views, 124,000 posts, and we've spent about $15,000 to keep this valuable resource for RVers free and open. But since we are now off the road and have settled down for the next chapter of our lives, we are taking the Forum down effective June 30, 2021. It has been a tough decision, but it is now time.

We want to thank all of our members for their participation and input over the years, and we want to especially thank those that have acted as Moderators for us during our amazing journey living and traveling in our RV and growing the RV-Dreams Family. We will be forever proud to have been founders of this Forum and to have been supported by such a wonderful community. Thank you all!!

Extended warranty insurance

We are hoping to fulltime in the next couple years.  We will pick up our new Montana shortly and would like some information on additional warranty coverage.  It is our understanding that everything is covered the first year but what should we purchase for years 2 +.  We received a quote from Good Sams for additional warranty coverage but it seemed high to us. Any info will be greatly appreciated.

Our Carriage Cameo came with a 2 year total warranty and a 5 year structural warranty and we decided that was sufficient. We had a few minor problems in the beginning that were handled by dealers, but nothing serious, nor expensive. The few issues that have come up since the warranty expired have been maintenance items like tires and batteries that wouldn't have been covered anyway.

Most people we have met that took the insurance have been sorry they sprung for it. It's usually expensive and not too easy to get things covered when they do go bad. It's probably better to do diligent research beforehand and choose a reliable maker. In that respect online discussion groups can be invaluable. Most brands have groups you can join before you buy.

Good luck,

First of all welcome to the forum. If you go to the search and type extended warranty you will find 4 or 5 different threads on this subject. You will find about a 50-50 split on if they are worth buying or not. For me I don't think they are worth the paper they are written on or the money you spend, but the next person will tell you how theirs saved them a big expense.I think it all comes down to how much you want to spend for peace of mind and how risk averse you are.

Jill Paul,

First off, Welcome to the foums. Like Fred said a lot of makes have online clubs/forums specific to their brands. The Montana site is the Montana Owners Club.

http://montanaadministrator.forumco.com/

There is a lot of good info there specific to us Montana owners.

I did purchase an extended service contract (warranty) to cover the big ticket items (a/c, fridge, furnace, water heater, slide outs, ect.). I have yet to use it (or need it) but it's there just in case. I paid right at $1,000 for the 7 year coverage w/ $50 deductable. I like having the piece of mind it brings since I can absorb a $50 hit to the budget better than a high $$$ repair bill. Others will disagree but I felt at the time (and still do) that it was worth the gamble to have it vs. taking my chances.

Please check out the MOC site and ask away here as well. Nice to see another Montana owner here in the "family".

We had a 2 yr warranty when we purchased our Elite Suites and would not take out an additional one.
