Hi Everyone. Well, after 15 years the RV-Dreams Community Forum is coming to an end. Since it began in August 2005, we've had 58 Million page views, 124,000 posts, and we've spent about $15,000 to keep this valuable resource for RVers free and open. But since we are now off the road and have settled down for the next chapter of our lives, we are taking the Forum down effective June 30, 2021. It has been a tough decision, but it is now time.

We want to thank all of our members for their participation and input over the years, and we want to especially thank those that have acted as Moderators for us during our amazing journey living and traveling in our RV and growing the RV-Dreams Family. We will be forever proud to have been founders of this Forum and to have been supported by such a wonderful community. Thank you all!!

Weight Confusion

Hello Everyone!
I'm having a sudden mental melt down trying to crunch the numbers for my truck to ensure that I will be able to tow a 5th wheel and not be overloaded.
I made a trip to the CAT Scale this morning...(FYI - take a stick with you just in case your scale is not 1-ton friendly, that streatch to the "call" button can be quite high.)

My truck is a 2001 F-350 Crew Cab Dually V-10 Engine 3:73 Gears...
GCWR is 17000 - from the owner's manual.
Steer Axle is 3620 lbs.
Drive Axle is 3160 lbs.
Gross Weight of truck is 6780 lbs.

If I subtract the GCWR (17K) from the Gross Weight of the truck(6780):
I get 10,220.

Is there something I'm missing that would give me a better guide for knowing what weight I need to stay under while shopping for a 5er...I see alot of 1-ton's going town the highway with LARGE fifth wheels attached...so I feel that I may be missing something...or should I sell the truck and try to find another vehicle?

I really like Hitchhiker's 32.5 RESBG...it has a Gross Weight Rating of 14365 lbs...

Do some of you have the 'numbers' for your rigs and be willing to share them?
Maybe if I see some other examples the concept will sink in...

Thanks so Much in advance!
She-Nist

The towing calculator shown in the above thread has moved to here:

Your problem isn't the truck, it's the engine. I think you need a diesel to get high GCWR. My 06 F350 with a 4:30 rear end has a GCWR of 26,000#

Trailer Life magazine has a web site that you can look up the tow ratings for all years and models going back about 10 years I think.

Good luck,

Hello Everyone!!!!
Just wanted to update, I have a better grip on truck weights and trailers now. I managed to sell my sticks-n-bricks in August after 3 LOOOONG years.  I'm staying with mom and dad for awhile until I find the right rig...I also sold my one-ton. I intend to find a diesel 450 either dodge or ford.
I hope everyone is doing well out there!
Best Regards,
She-Nist

norsado2,
I managed to find a nice F-450 w/7.3L Diesel from Mountain Master in Phoenix, AZ...drove it home this weekend...what a road trip!
It should handle anything I choose to hitch up to it.....I hope to have it mostly paid off by spring...then I can invest in a fiver.
Thanks!
Traci
