Hi Everyone. Well, after 15 years the RV-Dreams Community Forum is coming to an end. Since it began in August 2005, we've had 58 Million page views, 124,000 posts, and we've spent about $15,000 to keep this valuable resource for RVers free and open. But since we are now off the road and have settled down for the next chapter of our lives, we are taking the Forum down effective June 30, 2021. It has been a tough decision, but it is now time.


We want to thank all of our members for their participation and input over the years, and we want to especially thank those that have acted as Moderators for us during our amazing journey living and traveling in our RV and growing the RV-Dreams Family. We will be forever proud to have been founders of this Forum and to have been supported by such a wonderful community. Thank you all!!

You mentioned a sound machine in your journal that helps Linda not hear every little sound.  I have similar issues and wondered about this machine.  In the summer I like to leave a fan running as it makes a slight hum sound that drowns out other things that would wake me up.  I'm wondering if one of these sound machines would help me.  And does it bother you when trying to sleep?

Dan...like you... Sherri and I need noise to drown out the quite. Even staying in the park that we are in now...with all the car and truck noise we have to have some inside sound that is constant. We use a fan or we use the bedroom air just on fan. That is our sound machine.

Hi Dan,  I have had a white noise maker since 1991.  It is called a "Sleep Mate".  I bought it at Penny's.  You have to order them from the catalog now.  It is a tan, round  machine about 4 to 6 inches tall with small holes in the top & sides.  It makes the sound of a fan.  Cost about $50.00.  I have 2 of them.  One I take when traveling & my newest one stay's on my bedside table.  Both of my son's have one also.  Wouldn't be without it.  I have also seen one's that make the sounds of the ocean, falling rain, water falls, etc., but I don't like them as well as the Sleep Mate.  Hope this is helpful.

We have one from Sharper Image called a "Travel Soother" which runs on batteries or an optional AC adapter. Too bad Sharper Image is no more. But I have seen similar units at Brookstone stores in malls, if they still exist. We used it a lot in our older RV with less insulation, but only use it rarely in our present one where it mostly tells us the time and inside temperature.

We have used one for years at home and when we travel. We can't stand the dead quiet and the TV is too annoying. You can buy a white noise machine pretty much anywhere.....Target, Wal Mart, Bed/Bath & Beyond, etc. Ours has a multitude of sounds available.....white noise, rain drops, stream, ocean waves, heartbeat (for babies I guess). etc. They're not too expensive....between $25 - $50.

I'm a very light sleeper and have used a sleep machine for over 22 years. My roomate in college had one and I loved it. I used the Sleep Mate mentioned above - one of the best for pure white noise sound quality, until it died about a year ago. I then replaced it with a combination bedside clock, alarm, and sleep machine - and it worked ok, but there were slight variations in the white noise that bothered me. Since I travel quite a bit I ended up going with a smaller travel version "Merona", that is dual voltage and easy to pack in a suitcase. The different sounds - rain, waves, nature, don't work for me as I end up listening to the sounds. For pure white noise quality the Sleep Mate is the way to go. When I don't have my sleep machine with me, I hear ever little noise and I wake up continually throughout the night. Now even my husband loves it! When we first got married he thought it might bother him, but we ended up buying another one for him since he misses it when I'm traveling.

I just snore and it drowns out all noises....unfortunately the folks in the RV next to ours need a sound machine to drown out my snoring.

Hey Dan,

Finally getting back to you.  Linda also has a small sound machine from Sharper Image.  Lots of different settings - I think she uses the "waterfall".

She really has trouble sleeping without it.  I prefer to hear frogs and crickets and the sounds of nature, but the white noise doesn't bother me.  I sleep just fine no matter what.  smile

I think a sound machine or white noise machine may be just the thing for you.  Such a simple thing that has fixed sleep issues for lots of folks.  biggrin

If I used the Waterfall I would be in the potty three times a night instead of two! Like Howard...I'll stick with the crickets and frogs.

Ethel now uses the waterfall.  When she used the frogs and crickets, I kept stepping on a frog when I got up to go.  I just quit getting up to go.

My fan runs all night, 365 days/year unless it's really cold. This blocks out most noises for me.

Hi folks, new member here and while I do not own an RV, I have rented them in the past, enjoyed the heck out of them and would like to do the FT thing in the future. Anyways, not only have I learned a lot from all of you, I also realize that one does not have to be an RV'er to participate in some of the discussions on this board.
As for the white noise, or crickets, or what have you discussion, another solution if you are an iphone or blackberry user is to download one of 10's of thousands of apps available for the smartphones that will do the same thing. They cost from 'free' to a few bucks and in the case of noise, there are hundreds of apps out there that will simulate nature, fans, a/c running, etc.
