Hi Everyone. Well, after 15 years the RV-Dreams Community Forum is coming to an end. Since it began in August 2005, we've had 58 Million page views, 124,000 posts, and we've spent about $15,000 to keep this valuable resource for RVers free and open. But since we are now off the road and have settled down for the next chapter of our lives, we are taking the Forum down effective June 30, 2021. It has been a tough decision, but it is now time.

We want to thank all of our members for their participation and input over the years, and we want to especially thank those that have acted as Moderators for us during our amazing journey living and traveling in our RV and growing the RV-Dreams Family. We will be forever proud to have been founders of this Forum and to have been supported by such a wonderful community. Thank you all!!

'48 Chevy 1 Ton as our hauler

My husband and I may possibly be getting a 1948 Chevy 1 Ton flatbed truck and converting it to a diesel.  The truck's frame is in perfect condition and we think it might even run (we'll find that out soon) but of course it will still need some restoration.  Currently this truck has a two speed rear axel and 4 speed manual transmission and the original motor.  Otherwise it's in impeccable condition for it's age. 1948 Chevy 1 Ton Flatbed TruckTo view an image of what we plan on restoring it to just go to: http://www.oldchevytruck.com/trucks3/s.htm

We haven't gotten a fifth wheel camper yet (because the house needs to sell first) but we really like and plan to get a HitchHiker or Champagne that's at least a 35' and use the above truck to haul it.

Does anyone have any concerns or suggestions with using this pickup as a hauler for a large fifth wheel?

That looks really cool to an old car/truck guy but I'm not sure it would work without extensive renovation. Most modern 1 tons would be close to capacity with either 5ver.You could put a diesel in it and have plenty of power but will the rest of the drivetrain hold up or do you plan on transplanting newer stuff to the truck. You would need a modern braking system also because stopping is as important as going.
It would be really nice if you could make it work and you can but are your pockets deep enough for the expense? Good luck, I hope you can do as planned.

I think Racerguy is hitting it right on the head, a truck from 1948 isn't going to have any of the systems and components able to handle the loads of a modern 1 ton truck. Can't imagine it would be very comfortable either.
Good luck,
Fred
