Virginia licensing requirements - RV-Dreams Community Forum

Hi Everyone. Well, after 15 years the RV-Dreams Community Forum is coming to an end. Since it began in August 2005, we've had 58 Million page views, 124,000 posts, and we've spent about $15,000 to keep this valuable resource for RVers free and open. But since we are now off the road and have settled down for the next chapter of our lives, we are taking the Forum down effective June 30, 2021. It has been a tough decision, but it is now time.

We want to thank all of our members for their participation and input over the years, and we want to especially thank those that have acted as Moderators for us during our amazing journey living and traveling in our RV and growing the RV-Dreams Family. We will be forever proud to have been founders of this Forum and to have been supported by such a wonderful community. Thank you all!!

Virginia licensing requirements	Permalink

Go to the following link to see Virginia's rules regarding driver licensing of RV operators . See page 9. I am still looking for anything about using an HDT exclusively for personal/RV hauling and the licensing requirements. If anyone knows the Virginia requirements for this please respond. I talked with the Commercial Vehicle Dept section of the Virginia DMV this morning and asked them if a CDL is required if an HDT is used for private use only (non-commercial - towing an RV). The answer is basically yes, based on the weight of the truck and trailer combination. Below is the verbage from the DMV manual: *Operators of vehicles having a manufacturer’sgross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) or a grosscombination weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001lbs. or more are required to hold a valid CDL.* Class A — Any combination of vehicles with aGCWR of 26,001 lbs. or more, provided theGVWR of the vehicle being towed is more than 10,000 lbs.** Guess I have several options when the time comes to buy a truck. Obtain the CDL and all the hassles that go with it, or license it in another state as most people do. I'll determine what route to take when the time comes. I don't have a problem with the CDL icense, just all the severe penalties and restrictions that are associated with it vs. a normal operators license, especially since I'll be only using the truck for personal use. __________________

Before accepting that answer I would search the Excapees forum and find the posts related to HDTs in VA. Others have registered in VA and researched it. The info you got may be correct...but it also might not be. You can not necessarily believe what the DMV people tell you without in-depth research yourself.
