Hi Everyone. Well, after 15 years the RV-Dreams Community Forum is coming to an end. Since it began in August 2005, we've had 58 Million page views, 124,000 posts, and we've spent about $15,000 to keep this valuable resource for RVers free and open. But since we are now off the road and have settled down for the next chapter of our lives, we are taking the Forum down effective June 30, 2021. It has been a tough decision, but it is now time.

We want to thank all of our members for their participation and input over the years, and we want to especially thank those that have acted as Moderators for us during our amazing journey living and traveling in our RV and growing the RV-Dreams Family. We will be forever proud to have been founders of this Forum and to have been supported by such a wonderful community. Thank you all!!

RV Recall Information

Hi everyone. I'm wondering if there is any one place online we can go to to look for information on RV recalls? Do the manufacturer's websites have this information available?

As we begin to look at possible models for our home on wheels, particularly older models, we're concerned about making sure we have the most up-to-date recall information available.

Thanks!
Melinda

I doubt that the manufacturer's sites would have recall information.  They really aren't that proud of them.  The only place I personally am aware of where recall information is being disiminated is through Trailer Life or Motorhome Magazine.
I think the best place to get informed on such things is a forum of owners.  If you can find an internet forum of users of the type of RV you are interested in, you will probably get more information there.

The FMCA magazine also provides recall data. You might check the web sites of Trailer Life or Motorhome also.

RV manufacturers will not recall unless they have a disaster on their hands and they are forced to do it by some safety driven organization.  They will gladly defer to each component manufacturer who is ultimately responsible for recalls in the RV manufacturers mind.  So when major problems occur you get ping pong.  If your unit is still in warantee you may get a better response depending on your dealer.  If you have an extended warantee the finger pointing is exhausting.  OK I'm real negative about this.

Check out the specific owners forum or sometimes called owners club for a real look at the manufacturer.  All have some problems and all have a lemon or two along the way agravated by a bad dealer.  That's not what you are looking for.  Find the gung ho posters and find what they have fixed and replace after 3 or 4 years of ownership and why.  Operator error happens, wear and tear happens,  but axles don't bend, cracks don't occur, and roofs don't fail unless there is a serious owner mistake.  Most gung ho posters will fess up to overloading, tree limbs and the awning that was lower than their rig.  That is where you find the real pedigree of a manufacturer in my opinion.  But it takes research and persistence and to my knowledge there is no way to sort it out without thoughtful work.  Yuck!

If you will go to RVtravel.com a free newsletter they will give you information on most all manufactures....look under recent rv recalls.  Issue 317 of rv travel go to the bottom of the page and you can read all recalls for a year.

Hi,
Rather than worry about recalls, which I think are not too widespread in the industry, I think you'd be better served by focusing  on identifying a brand and model that is suitable for full time living. Most RV's are made for vacation use and are not suitable, nor warranted for full time usage. Identifying which ones are, especially older years, can be difficult.

Toward that end, a small investment in joining the RV Consumer Group would give you loads of information to make a broader informed decision. The fact that a model is recalled doesn't neccessarily mean it's not a good product.

Good luck,

Fred

Use the official Department of Transportation NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) recall database site for all official vehicle recalls.

BTW: You will find many many many RV recalls across all brands in that database over the past dozen years. Yes, RVs do see numerous recalls, especially MHs and their chassis.

Also note that manufacturers have "campaigns" for things that are not severe enough for a government sanctioned recall and these are not advertised so you'll need to call the manufacturer with your specific year/model and see if there are any "campaigns" for it.
