Hi Everyone. Well, after 15 years the RV-Dreams Community Forum is coming to an end. Since it began in August 2005, we've had 58 Million page views, 124,000 posts, and we've spent about $15,000 to keep this valuable resource for RVers free and open. But since we are now off the road and have settled down for the next chapter of our lives, we are taking the Forum down effective June 30, 2021. It has been a tough decision, but it is now time.
We want to thank all of our members for their participation and input over the years, and we want to especially thank those that have acted as Moderators for us during our amazing journey living and traveling in our RV and growing the RV-Dreams Family. We will be forever proud to have been founders of this Forum and to have been supported by such a wonderful community. Thank you all!!
Hi Linda. Howard wrote recently on a journal entry, that "Linda" was coloring her hair.. That reminded me of one of my biggest worries of our full timing plans... My Hair. Who and where will I get it cut and colored? I guess I take my chances at getting my hair cut, but I have always colored my owns hair. Soon the problem will be, where and how will I do this? One drop of hair color on floor or anything nearby that area is forever stained. Also I don't have very large sinks in the rv, especially the bathroom. Before we remodeled the master bedroom and bath in our home, I used the sink in the bathroom. No matter how careful I was over the years, I managed to get a couple of stains on the floor and the cupbroard. After our remodel I started using the laundry sink in the garage.
do you color your hair in your rv?

Yes, I finally got brave enough to color my hair in the RV. We have a couple of old sheets that I use on the floor where I set up. Now luckily we have vinyl floor in our bathroom area in the bedroom. I throw another sheet over the edge of the bed that is closest to me and I use several old towels all around me. I sit on a little stool in front of a full length mirror. So far these procautions have worked. I take my time and don't put too much color on the brush at one time.
Now for the rinsing. That is the part that scared me the most. I did not want to stain my sinks or shower. So if we are at a campground with a bath house, I go there to rinse. Where we are staying now does not have a bath house so I came up with this solution. I covered my kitchen sink with Glad Press N' Seal plastic wrap. It worked great!
I do my own hair sometimes and sometimes I go to a salon. This time, here in Rockport, TX I went to a salon.
If I do my own hair, I have a green garbage bag that I cut holes in for my head and arms and that protects me. I've never gotten any on the floor (I don't use anything on the floor as anything on the tile just wipes up) but I have gotten it on the walls - go figure - and it just wipes off. I rinse in the kitchen sink and then clean thoroughly and disinfect. The only other place I've gotten the colour is on the bathroom sink which is china and it just wipes off. It's not a problem to do it myself, sometimes I'm just lazy.
The salon that did it in Rockport this time did it darker than I would like but she looked at my roots and went from there. I thought she was going to do it more blonde but this is more my natural color so I'm not picky!
You can see it at: http://srmerrikinblog.blogspot.com/ - Monday Feb2
Hi Linda, This is from Kathy, I'm borrowing Grant's "handle". After remodeling the bathrooms in my stick house, I didn't want to ruin the new floor and cabinets. I had a vinyl shower curtain liner left over and it makes a great water proof drape for the sink, cabinet and floor. You can get these everywhere real cheap, Target, Mervyns, Sears. You can hose it off outside when you're done, hang it to dry and it folds up nice and small.
I like your idea of using the bath house in camp, most places have tile or non-pourous floors, so the rinsed out hair color won't damage them.
Ok, I'm going to go out here on a limb and say that once we made the decision to go full time, I stopped coloring my hair. Not because I was afraid of the mess, but because part of the reason for choosing this lifestyle was to simplify my life, become less materialistic, less vain, more natural. I'm pretty happy as that is something I no longer have to fret about or spend time on. Also, as we age, the colored hair looks to me less and less natural. It's pretty obvious when you see someone in their 60's or 70's with flaming red, chestnut brown or golden yellow hair, that they are coloring it. And the older we get, the worse it looks (just my humble opinion).
I do still need to get a good cut from time to time, and that has been hit or miss. I've had some great cuts on the road, and some not so great ones. Just last week I got one of the great ones. Out of six salons I called on short notice, this was the only one I could get in to, so I worried that maybe it was because they weren't good, but what a surprise. And anyway, it's just hair, it always grows out, so it's not a big deal.
While I'm at it, let me say that I also stopped wearing makeup. What a time saver that has been. So now I spend my time just enjoying my life. I don't take an hour in the bathroom every morning, and I don't worry about my roots growing out.
And I can't say all this without also saying I have the most loving supportive husband in the world. He actually encouraged me in all the foregoing activities

If you're not getting older...........you're dead!
Great Question! It's interesting to hear different perspectives. I can appreciate the simplification of lifestyle, one of our reasons for going on the road too! But I'm not ready to stop dying my hair. Some people have a lovely smooth gray hair, mine is more kinky frizz - like the crazy lady living alone with 73 cats! At 39, I'm not ready to stop coloring yet~! I know eventually it will go the way of the other things that have faded out of my life, like high heel shoes and bikinis, but for now I'm holding on to it!
Thanks for all the good tips on how to keep the rig color-free. I hadn't thought of that aspect of 'coloring on the road'.
Yes, this is a good subject! I just turned 58, and I retired last May. I stopped coloring my hair several years ago, it just got to be too expensive to have it done, and I didn't like messing with it at home. However, I thought I would never stop wearing make up. I have very light eyebrows and lashes and thought I needed the mascara and liner. But now we're "almost" full timers, and I just don't bother with it most of the time. I still have it with me and will wear a little sometimes if we're going somewhere special. Most days, I don't bother. I think it has helped me simplify my life and focus on what's important now, spending time with my husband and dogs, seeing this beautiful country, and slowing down.
I'll just get brave and cover everthing like you do Linda. I also like the idea of using a bath house if possible. The shower curtain suggestion is great too. As far as full timing and vanity goes? I go more often now without wearing make up. I never wore much anyway. I'm just not sure about going gray just yet. Once we get out there, who knows?

I used to wear make-up every day but not any more! Like you, I am just not ready to go gray yet!
I find myself wearing my hair in a cap most of the time so it is not so bad to have roots, but when I want to get all "girly" and wear my hair down, I just can't stand to see the roots.
I still want my hair colored, and I've had it done by a pro for the past 12 years. I get a two part process, first the roots and then Redken Shades pulled through the ends. Makes for an extremely natural looking job that can't be readily duplicated at home.
Besides the vanity reasons, I've found the salon to be a fantastic way to meet local people in an extended and relaxed setting. We find the greatest places to go and things to do in the towns where I end up getting my hair done. Plus I often learn a lot about the issues being faced by ordinary folks in the community. For me, this is part of the cultural discovery.
I have a written copy of my formula, including brand names for the two types of color I use. That fact gives me the confidence to choose salons all over the country. I do try to find a Redken salon as that is the brand my formula uses, but I've never had a problem as this is probably the best-selling beauty line out there.
Oh my gosh, I never thought of the hair problem, LOL. I am still in the looking process for motorhomes, insurance, health care, and NOW i am beginning to panic. I am just laughing my butt off over this. I am so glad this topic was mentioned. Now I have to find a way to color my hair myself. Thanks for the heads up. Peggy
2 years ago when we started making our plans to be fulltimers I decided to stop coloring my hair. I had been doing it for about 12 years. I was 57 then and really wasn't sure how gray I was but knew it was a lot. I kept my hair short and it took about 6 months. Once I made the decision I never looked back and so glad I did it because it was just part of simplifying my life. Fortunately my husband likes it and I do get compliments on it that I never expected, so you never know until you try it !!!

Good Morning Ladies - Let me give you a man's perspective. I like natural. I've always enjoyed the salt and pepper color. The silver is a highlight both visually and appreciatively. I suspect a lot of men feel the same way but that subject doesn't seem to come up while we are talking about trucks and tools.
"Man, Howard, that is some truck. You really keep it waxed up. Is that Carnauba on it? By the way, did you notice that gal emtying her tanks this morning? Imagine that, she emptied the tanks. Her husband is one lucky guy. But did you see those gray streaks? She really needs to do something about those. Some peroxide and she'd be a complete package..."
I don't ever recall looking at a woman and thinking, "she would look a lot better if she would color her hair..." But then I've never looked at a woman and thought she needed any type of augmentation.
Having said that, I get a little free time every couple months as I wait for Robin to get her highlight done. Go figure.
Another interesting thing. Robin and I both used to go to a pretty expensive salon for cuts and color. We've tried many. Our current, and by far the best as well as the least expensive is...... Walmart!! Believe it or not. The WalMart salon here has an award winning stylist. Her specialty is coloring.
They are walk-in, first come first served. When we do hit the road full time in four years we will be checking out the WalMarts. We'll grab a pretzel and observe the quality of the cuts/coloring on the gals exiting the salon before making a committment.
This my perspective as a "wannabe". In preparation for our RVing I am in the process of going "au natural" after years of dying my hair blonde; I also see it as a lifestyle simplication, it saves money and let's face it, what could possibly be "healthy" about dying your hair? Also, I am blessed with a very supportive DH that has helped me "face" this change. I am looking forward to my "new" look. And if I really hate it, I can always get highlights which you don't have to do as often or be concerned with roots showing. But I am hoping that I can stick to my guns on this issue and not bail out. I think most importantly you should do whatever makes you feel the best about yourself.
Interesting topic....I quit coloring mine at age 50 when hubby and I did our first time full-timing stint. The main reason was I thought the chemicals involved would be bad for the plumbing & tanks. So I let it grow until I couldn't stand it, went in to a local shop where we were and told her to make it short....LOL! One more cut and all the color was gone. I had been coloring since my late 20's when my first gray streak started.
Like some of the others, I also quit wearing make-up and unless it's a really special occasion, I still don't. If they guys don't like it, that's their problem...LOL!
Now I wear it really short all the time (thanks to helmet hair) and yet everyone compliments me on it. I've even had people ASK me who colors my hair (like I would pay someone to color it gray...LOL!). The distinctive graying pattern makes me stand out and easy to recognize...here's a shot from the back.
This is a great subject! I have been wondering what I would do. I try to be careful at home and still have accidents. The washroom would be a good idea. I would probably have to try it first before I could give it up. But giving it up sure sounds really good. As for makeup I am not one to wear a whole lot of. I mainly wear a bit of fondation and some blush.
Just wanted to comment on the hair coloring I use hair coloring, perms etc in my RV, and it shouldn't effect your tanks/seals. If you make sure your "grey tank" is charged (enough water at the bottom) before you start adding any type of chemical to the tank you shouldn't have any problem at all. Bleach is a chemical and folks put bleach in their washing machines which ultimately go in the grey tanks and some folks use bleach in their dishes which ends up in the galley tank. Hair Color contains most often hydrogen peroxide, which actually is a "weak" type of chemical compared to bleach. Anyway, before I put any chemicals (cleaning agents etc) in my tanks I make sure they're charged, and then all you are getting in there is dilluted version, that should be dumped and not sit in there for a long time. If you're fulltiming your tanks won't ever sit long enough before dumping Hope this helped somebody.
When we began full timing, I was a Loreal Dark Brown. My hair is very thick and grows quickly which means that after 2 weeks, my bright silver roots were showing. After 3 weeks, I was embarrassed until I got around to coloring it again. I never did try to color it in our own bathroom but waited until we were somewhere with a bathroom that I didn't mind staying in for an hour. It became clear to me that I had to end this cycle. I had a weave done. I always thought a "weave" was like hair extensions but it is actually color weaved into your hair. Varing shades of blonde to silver (its all in how long the peroxide is left in), were added to the length of my hair. As the roots continue to grow out, I have more silver added to the length as I work towards matching my natural color. As there is no real root line (the highlights don't start at my scalp), I can go 6-8 weeks without thinking about my hair. I only wish I had done this years ago. Another thing is that if you have any of those stylish hair pieces that you clip on, you can have them colored to match your hair!
Enjoyed reading all the comments on haircoloring and haircuts. I stopped coloring...well highlighting really...in my 40's; then found the right solution for me was using "I'm worth it" product...it seemed to blend all the natural colors of my hair, which had begun to include grey..or silver; when I noticed that my roots were more white, I went "cold turkey".....and to my surprise I like the "au natural" me. That was in my late 40's early 50"s I think. By 2003 I had to retire (do to strokes) and so I was ready to "hit the road". Unfortunately its taken us til now..2009....to get this close it. Haircuts would be my concern so I guess I just take my changes every 6 wks or so. When we first retired and came to WA, I tried long hair...you know....the "earthy look"....pulling it back into a braid. But it just didn't look good on me like it does on others. So I'm back to my old "bob" style...its easy to take care of anyway. I just have to remember to use conditioner regularly...Hugs to you all. And....thanks for sharing!

After only five months of our new travelling lifestyle, I'm taking the initial plunge tomorrow to start the growing out process. Tricia, I'm so glad you posted in this area as I had never noticed it before - boy, this board has a LOT of info!
It's very timely as tomorrow I have an appointment with a colorist I've never met, that I know precious little about other than a referral from the nice gal at the RV park office and the stylist that knows we're leaving town on Monday! Since I have a good 1 - 1 1/2 inches of nice gray roots showing, I'm going to ask for a blend of highlights and lowlights to try to 'match' what's growing out - then cut a few inches off my shoulder length hair and see what happens! I'm not bold enough to go short at the same time, but I'm looking forward to a life free of worrying about roots after having spent almost exactly half my life highlighting, dye-ing, etc. (first gray appeared when I was 22).
Thanks ladies for all the info offered here over the past couple of years! Here's hoping for the best tomorrow! I figure I'll either like it, be o.k. with it, or I'll be shopping for some cute hats! Linda
The growing out process can really be a pain. Linda ~ your plan sounds perfect. Getting a blend of highlights and lowlights should work just fine. I haven't for years now....but at first when I was in the "growing out" stage, I did you a light blonde shade of Loreal. It seemed to blend all the varying colors of my natural hair and it also conditioned it. It always felt so soft. Now..I just need to remember to use conditional and maybe some rinse (depending on water wherever we would happen to be). I know my white hair picks up chemical deposits that may be in the water..and I'll get a yellowish cast to part of my hair.

Think you said this was for me? LOL!! I carry a picture of Jamie Lee Curtis with me to show hairstylists. That's as close as I can get to what I want. It does need cutting every 4-6 weeks (depending on how quickly it's grown and how short the last cut was). I'm at the point that I don't worry much about it. Used to be a "every hair in place" person. Much more fun this way.
I went natural coloring when my late husband and I went full-time. Didn't want to start paying someone (had done it myself for 20 or so years) and didn't want to do it in the RV (messy). So grew it as long as I could and then got it cut short as I could stand it. Two of those and I was done. LOL!
I wash it every 3-4 days, just wet it in the morning if a fluffing with my hands doesn't get rid of sleep cowlicks. Easy care...has to be since we ride our motorcycle a lot and always wear helmets.
omygosh, hadn't even considered this problem. I'm just starting to go grey, if I keep plucking them out I won't have any hair left LOL! I always said I would color when it gets too grey, but it sounds like such a pain to grow it out I think I won't start! Thanks for bringing up the subject.
Also, on another note someone mentioned hair extentions, they are great for camping when you want to dress up without a lot of work. I've bought POP extentions which just clip in and give you a great pony tail or long extentions that just clip in and give you great hair without the work. They are pretty cheap and you can match your hair color.
Good luck on your coloring adventures!

I had to smile when I found this thread. My husband knows this is an issue with me. My color/highlights and cut are the one girly pampering thing I've done for years. I grew up with all brothers and had only sons so I always had this thing I did that reminded me and them that I was not one of the guys! (LOL) We are getting ready to full time in the next couple years and this has been one of my biggest worries - the other probably bigger issues don't seem to phase me. I haven't been able to talk myself into going gray yet. I have started to phase out the highlights so I can do one color and my stylist is helping. I think the suggestion of doing it where there is a great shower house is the way to go for me. Great suggestions and it is nice to know I'm not the only one who had this concern.

I quit coloring my hair when we became "long timers" in 1993. I was 42 yrs. old at that time. I quickly found out my hair wasn't gray...it was white. Everyone pays compliments on my hair color, so I guess I look "OK". Now that we are F/T I'm very glad I don't have to mess with having a stranger do my hair coloring every 5 weeks. Over the counter products will not cover the white effectively. It is what it is! For my own personal needs, I'd rather save the $$$ on salon jobs and just not have to worry about it. Everyone needs to do what they feel comfortable doing, though. If you are insecure with the gray color, by all means color it a beautiful color. It's all good.
This is agreat topic. I stopped coloring my hair when I thought that I would let it highlight naturally. I, too like tumwatergal found that it was white. I usually get it cut at one length about every three years. I donate it when it gets to 10 inches or longer to locks of love or wigs for kids. They usually give a free haircut when you donate. The main reason that I donate is because my hair grows so fast and I can do some good. Just thought that others might consider this option. Susan

I am LOOKING FORWARD to being able to color my hair when I get on the road. :P I am thinking teal. But it doesn't look professional, so I can't do it now! :) Glad to hear it is possible!

I am glad this thread came to the front. DW colors her own hair, and we haven't givien any thought as to how she will do that in an RV. I don't imagine she will ever let it go completely gray or not :)
I decided to go "natural" on the road because it got very complicated to find a new stylist every month. I wish I had gone completely silver, but instead went kinda blahish grey. Are there any products out there that will brighten the grey? Everything I see on the market is made to cover the grey, not highlight it.
My hair has always been very long and very thick but the thought of spending $85. or more to have it colored usually drives me to the bathroom with 3 or 4 boxes of hair color lol! In the old Layton I sometimes sat at the picnic table with a mirror and colored it but most of the time a sink full of warm water, a wash cloth and a couple well placed towels work just fine for the bathroom. As for rinsing, filling the tub with cold water first dilutes the chemicals as does a half filled grey water tank. (Again in the old Layton, I never gave a thought about the chemicals damaging the tank or seals, plus it didn't have tank sensors like our 5er does.) Mean Green, Greased Lightning or That Purple Stuff (diluted in a spray bottle) works great on cleaning the tub/shower of any color residue.
I've also used the spare water hose and did the first rinse outside which worked great in the warmer months lol, but even here in the south, the water out of the hose can get pretty cold in winter months. Our 5er however, has an outside shower so my next color job (which will be any day now) I'll just use it when I rinse out my hair.
Having said all of that lol, I had a "fed up with all this hair" attack yesterday and had it cut to shoulder length and layered. It really needed a major cut because it was looking so scraggly no matter what I did with it and I knew it would be easier to color once I cut it, but the biggest reason was simply because I had more hair than hot water lol!
Has anyone found a good at home highlighting kit? I used to have my hair highlighted at a salon, but can't afford that anymore. I was always naturally blond, but the older I get, the more "mousey brown/gray" my hair gets. I've always been scared to try the home highlighters, I'm afraid my hair will turn orange or something! But if someone has had good luck with one, I'd love to hear about it.
In all the years I've been coloring my hair myself, the only time I had less than desired results was when I used Loreal's Feria line. It was my own fault because when reading the box at the store, I did not see the line that said "NOT FOR USE ON GREY HAIR" LOL! It came out a much brighter red than I had intended LOL! So I just called Loreal's 1-800 number, they told me recoloring it would tone it down and told me just which color to use. Plus they sent me $30. worth of coupons ($10.00 coupon for each box I used). After I recolored it, it was perfect. In fact it was the exact shade I'd been looking for to start with! I got so many compliments on it, even the hair stylists where I got my nails done wanted to know who did my hair because the color was magnificent with my skin tone.
So, take the plunge and don't worry about it. Just follow the instructions and remember, if you don't like it, A: you can change it, B: there's always someone on the other end of the phone that can tell you how to fix it lol and C: it's only hair, it'll grow out. Have fun and Good Luck!

Melanie, Don't give up too soon. We are full-timers and I still go to a hairdresser and have my hair cut and about three times a year I have it highlighted. I also still wear my make-up but just not nearly as much as before. A little foundation, blush, mascara, lipstick and I'm good to go. Good luck in your transition.
I agree with Gerri on this one. Although I don't color any longer, I do search and locate a reputable Salon, especially while near larger metro areas. My heaviest makeup now days is mineral foundation, neutral eye color, mascara and lip gloss. I don't want to look like I'm camping in the woods, but I am comfortable with a more natural look.
This is just a man's opinion, and we all know what that is worth. What is wrong with the way God made you? All people have an inner beauty, and it shows through any amount of paint or color that can be applied. Believe me, I would much rather see and converse with a man or woman that is honest and forthright.
I realize I will get flmed for this post, but it is the way I feel. I am reminded of an old rancher in West Texas. He was on his way to a larger city nearby. He was asked if he was going to dress up. His response was, Why? I ain't going to see anybody that I know, and if I don't know 'em, why would I want to impress 'em. Lot of truth in that.
One of the chief attractions of this life style is being able to shed all the trappings and requirements of the working life and "keeping up with the Joneses" and to simply relax and take everything easy.
Quite frankly, it's the people that are all "buffed up" that look out of place in most campgrounds.
I also get my hair colored, and had already started thinking about how this was going to work when we hit the road. Yesterday, after I read this thread, I went and asked my hubby what he thought about going "au natural" once we start full-timing. (He also gets the ol' color thing - neither of us wanted to go gray in our 40s.) He said he'd been thinking the same thing, both because of always having to find a hair salon, and also the expense. So we're going to go for it - and let our real color (such as it is) come to the surface. I have no idea whether mine is silver, gray or white!! LOL (I don't have to worry about the makeup question though, as I have never been one for wearing makeup.)
Delaine has colored her hair since the first time I ever seem this good looking woman and that was the day before I left for Vietnam in 1967. When we were full timing and wish we still were, but we are still on the road 7 to 8 months a year. Delaine just finds some person while we are on the road that can do what she wants. Haven't had a problem so for. However we do no boondocking and we only use full service RV parks with full hook ups. Delaine doesn't wear make-up. I Love her just the way she is. RVing is just like living in a stick house except we can move if we don't like the place we are in. Life is good, use the time we are given and do what you want. GBY.....

While I appreciate the idea of letting my natural color come out I just can't go there. I think I am afraid if I look older I will feel older - but everyone has to find their own comfort zone. I just learned how to color my own hair, did by watching a youtube video (you can find anything out there). Found a good quality color at Sally's and I am really happy with the result. Makes me wish I had done this instead of spending all that money at the salon all these years. So ladies if you do still want to color your hair on the road it is definitely doable and for those going natural, maybe in the future I will be joining you just not quite yet. Remember to do what makes you happy. (Guys remember we don't always do it for you sometimes we do it for us.)

Oh, Fred...I'm worried now....I like to get all "buffed" up....makes ME feel good about ME....but I don't want to look out of place in the campgrounds!!
Fred, you are funny. Actually, at this point I probably would pick out the high end RV parks. On the other hand, my DH would want to go "cheap"! We are trully opposites....that's why now, while we are waiting to start this new life, we spending more time together, outside, watching movies, etc.
I love reading all of the posts on this forum and I'm trying to picture myself there....I have to say...it's becoming more appealing!!
In any event, I will always be the one putting on the makeup....looking for a good salon, and cooking inside the rig....I LOVE to COOK!!
i think that you should do what you have always done. the whole point is that your rv is your home. the only thing i do different is i wait to put on my heels till we are in the car so the rocks in some campgrounds dont mess them up. i still dye my hair , get my nails done, have days where i live in teeshirts and shorts and days when i dress up in skirts and heels. organize your life around you not the other way around
Thanks Sara....that's what I was thinking. I do love to be casual...just love the girly girl stuff too. It's been fun reading everyone's opinion. I love this website and especially all of those like me who are still working and dreaming!
After being on the road since Novemer of 09 I still color my own hair, have it cut at beauty schools about every 2 months and give myself mani's and pedis. It also depends on where you are and what makes you feel comfortable. In Miami during the holidays through January I did more of the primping. Now we're out west in Wyoming and caps and sunscreen are more important. But I do agree that living in an RV does not mean I'm "camping", it's just that my home happens to have wheels! I like to dress up occasionally for dinner or drinks but most of the time I just like to feel comfortable and enjoy life whatever the mood happens to be that day.
I've been coloring my hair for years and . . . well so long that I really don't know what color it is (other than the really gray roots now and then).
When we lived on the houseboat I worried about coloring my hair on the boat because our grey water went overboard. I called clairol and asked what, if any, product they had that would be safe to use - they told me Hydrience was the product to use - besides rinsing with lots of water, like in a shower would dilute it so much it wouldn't be harmful.
I'm not sure I'd buy that now, but I never had a problem with it staining the fiberglass shower and if I cleaned up any drips right away it wasn't an issue.
When we go full time I don't think I'll stop coloring my hair or wearing the little bit of makeup that I wear now and then. Right now we're living on a 40 acre farm in the middle of Nowhere ND so I've let myself go . . . but when we get back to a life I plan on cleaning my act up. My darling husband doesn't mind - but I think I will feel better.
