Hi Everyone. Well, after 15 years the RV-Dreams Community Forum is coming to an end. Since it began in August 2005, we've had 58 Million page views, 124,000 posts, and we've spent about $15,000 to keep this valuable resource for RVers free and open. But since we are now off the road and have settled down for the next chapter of our lives, we are taking the Forum down effective June 30, 2021. It has been a tough decision, but it is now time.


We want to thank all of our members for their participation and input over the years, and we want to especially thank those that have acted as Moderators for us during our amazing journey living and traveling in our RV and growing the RV-Dreams Family. We will be forever proud to have been founders of this Forum and to have been supported by such a wonderful community. Thank you all!!

Trivia Question - First Fifth Wheel Trailer?

Does anyone know what company first introduced fifth wheel trailers, and when?

I know that regular trailers go back to the 30's, but can't seem to find any info on fivers.  We did see at the Glen Curtis museum in NY that he is credited with the invention of the fifth wheel hitch in the 20's, but I can't seem to find any mention of commercial introduction.

Any historians out there?

You might check with NuWa (HitchHiker). They have been around a long time. If you go to www.nuwaowners.org/forum and ask the question on the forum the CEO of NuWa will answer you. I think his grandfather started the company many years ago.-Dick

Fred,
I was just on the NuWa forum and saw that the CEO of nuwa answered your question. I did quite a bit of research before buying our 2007 nuwa HitchHiker. I checked numerious forums to see problems people were having with their 5th wheels. I purchased a 35 CKQG HitcherHiker Champagne and could be happier. Having the factory support on the forum has answered numerious questions for nuwa owners. I would highly recommend anyone looking for a 5th wheel to look at nuwa.

Fred,

My husband and I were at the RV museum several years ago and if my memory serves me, I believe the first 5th Wheel was built by Glenn Curtiss of Curtiss-Wright ( partner with the
Wright Brothers) in 1917.  The units were built by Curtiss Aerocar thru the 1930's and were
designed to be pulled behind the rumble seat coupes not trucks.
