can anyone recommend a nice rv park close to st.mary's georgia. We are searching for a nice place to go for 10 days middle of march. has anyone stayed at A BIG WHEEL RV PARK? had any experience with Crooked River State Park? how about Laura S. Walker State park?
We went to Stephen S. Foster one year around Memorial Day & the yellow deer flies were so bad that we had to leave after a couple days. they BITE and nothing you can spray or rub on will keep them from biting! We don't want that kind of experience again but are thinking that middle of March will not see much in the way of a bad bug problem???!!!correct me if I am wrong about this, please!

We've stayed at Crooked River State Park at least a couple of times and have enjoyed it. One of the stays was in April and I don't recall any serious bug problems. There are shaded and open sites so you can probably find something that you like. You may know that the Georgia parks don't allow you to reserve a particular site - you pick one once you get there. I remember noticing that there are a few unadvertised full hookup sites on the right side loop as you come into the campground.

Howard and Linda stayed at both the Crooked River and Laura S. Walker state parks in November, I think. Check their reviews on this website.
We have been to Crooked River and enjoyed the area. The deer flies are seasonal and primarily a problem in mid-summer.

We've stayed at Crooked River in both October and November. We did have an electric spike in one of the sites on the river and had to replace some florescent fixtures but otherwise it was a great place to stay. No bugs either time.

We have also stayed at Crooked River and loved it. We've stayed in the fall with no bugs. We've also stayed at Jekyll Island Campground which isn't that far away. However, if you want to stay close to St. Mary's, you can't go wrong with Crooked River.

We stayed at Jekyll Island in October,2009 and fell in love with the place. Not too far from St Marys, I think it took us 30-40 minutes when we visited. Can't speak for the time of year you are going, but a GREAT place to camp and visit. Best to you, Ken and Bonnie

I have also visited at Jekyll Island Campground. You have Driftwood Beach very nearby and it is hauntingly beautiful. There is a Historic District to explore, a fishing pier across from the entrance to the CG, and other beaches to walk. Our goal in the future is to take our RV to the campground for a few months from Thanksgiving to beginning of March. Our friends who stay on J.I. have told us that, after March 1st or so, there are bugs called "no-see-ums" that are really irritating, they can even get through screens. They seem impervious to any kind of chemical. The only way to deal with them is to have a fan on most of the time. Near the Historic District is The Georgia Sea Turtle Center - it is a great sea turtle rescue hospital where you can go in and see the turtles they have rescued and are rehabbing. It's an island full of history, and there is a bookstore in the Historic District that sells books about the history of the Island. If you like history....this is a place for you! ok, researching "bug problems" at St. Mary's and/or Crooked River State Park, looks like the only time to avoid bugs is to go during winter. My DH thinks if we move inland some & stay at Laura S. Walker State Park & just go to St. Mary's for a day visit we won't have as bad a problem, if any, with bugs while we try to relax around the camper. we are going mar 3 thru mar 13. Does anyone have personal experience during that time frame in those areas? We really don't want to have to stay covered in bug spray the whole time!
