On a lark, we bought a 5er with one slide several years ago.. my half ton would have barely handled it on the flats. Being a professional dump truck driver I know weight limits and when not to push them. So, we bought a 2006 2500 hd chevy. Power to spare with the DURAMAX diesel with the Allison tranny behind it. Fresh shoes on the trailer helps stop it alot better.
We've taken several long trips to Niagara Falls,NY., Mammoth Cave in Ky., Dale Hollow Lake in Tenn., Richond, VA., Casa Grande, AZ. with several week long trips in Ohio (Old Mans cave in the Hoching Hills area is beautiful almost any time of year) All this, the beauty, the wonder of nature didn't satisfy us. We want...no.. WE NEED MORE !!! We also know that we will need a larger unit for FT
I know I'm preaching to the choir here, but like all of you.. we yearn to see the sunrise over the Atlantic and a sunset over the Pacific and every place north and south in between. That said, we look forward to enjoying this forum and following everyones' travels. Hope to see you somewhere on the road.

Bill,
With a target date of mid 2012, you should have plenty of time to research larger trucks and fifth wheels. In our case, we spent 2 years researching all of the options, including motorhomes. Since we are selling our home and planning on living many a year in our fifth wheel, we wanted to make sure we had a suitable fifth wheel and a truck with which to pull it.
Checking my signature, you can see what we ended up with, and checking our Photobucket account, you can see photos of the fifth wheel. In days past, I was also an 18-wheeler and also understand weight requirements.
Welcome to the RV Dreams forums. You'll find a lot of knowing people and they are helpful and friendly as well. Of the 4 or 5 forums that I frequent, this one is by far the most active.
Feel free to ask questions or make comments. We all learn from each other.

Good choice of a truck! We love ours (we went through 2 others before settling on the GMC Duramax). It is so comfortable!!
