Not sure if this topic has been covered in a previous forum or not. I seem to be the one family member elected to be the keeper of all the family pictures, all 9 million of them.
How have you guys handled family pictures? Do you store them? Do you give them to another family member? Do you toss them?
I've decided to scan them and save a digital copy. The only problem is it takes for ever to scan through the pictures. I also thought about taking some on the road to scan, sort of make a hobby out of it.
Just looking for some feedback how you guys have done it or are doing it.
Scanning is sure time consuming!

When through them and divided them out by who were in the pics then asked them if they wanted them. Scanned a few for our digital picture frame and downloaded a few.

We told the family we had no room for them and if they wanted them come and get them or they would have to be destroyed.I wouldn't really do that but they didn't know that.Digitized the ones we wanted and family took the rest.

I felt like I had 9 million pictures !! LOL!! I found a really nice company in Georgia that put all of my pictures on disc. Only took 2 days. We stayed in a beautiful state park. I finished up with 32 disc's. We organized them the way we wanted, added captions and could have added music. We chose not to do that. I even made copies for my daughter. I used a service called scanmyphotos.com to scan all the thousands of photos we had. Then I divided up the original and sent any that were of other family members to them and let them deal with them however they pleased. Even then it takes a great deal of time but now my photos are digitized it makes it a lot easier.

We had half a dozen of those big storage containers full. Our old scanner was a flatbed so I loaded as many as I could, scanned to file, opened each file in photoshop, cropped and saved as 1-A, 1-B, etc, saved on my external book, copied, pasted and burned dvd copies for all family. I gave my niece(scrapbooker) all the totes full and have several burned copies around and with us in our fireproof safe. Put mine on a stick and plug into photo frame that shows them as a slideshow. Took a long time but is well worth it. I even scanned the saved newspaper clippings, obits, and death certificates that were left in my care. To think it all fits on a dvd and usb stick. Downsizing is a good thing.

Awesome job Janni. I wish I had the time to do it, but I was very pleased with the service we used. I am just glad to have it all on disc. My kids have the pictures now and have made several collage picture's to hang in their homes. We always love to visit and see all the old pictures hanging in their homes. Even the grandkids ask about their "great, greatgrandmother " etc. It is soooo worth the work to pass along these photo's

I started scanning my pictures about 3 years before we actually went full time. I saved them to my harddrive in folders labeled either by the vacation location or by the year.
I also transferred all of my VHS family videos onto the computer using a program from Pinnacle which I bought on Amazon.
I put all of this onto an external harddrive for each child and one for myself. The video takes up a lot of space so I didn't want to store it on my computer and bog things down. Even though I have boys, I was surprised how happy they were to have these memories. I also put my favorite pictures on a stick to use in my digital picture frame.
Then I threw away all the pictures and tapes. People thought I was crazy, but I have three backup copies, so I felt safe doing that.

Most all our family pictures were slides. Not many people even know what a slide is. I scanned my slides and put them on disk and memory sticks. This cleaned up a lot of totes and now we can run them non-stop on our picture frame.
