I am almost finished my commitment and am very anxious to revisit my Daughter, Son-in-Law, and Gr-Kids. I last seen them on Thanksgiving 2005, and we celebrated Christmas early. Finances are restricted this time and the length of time staying being reduced. Yes, excited and saddened rolled into one. Am I the only one who feels this way; sometime guilty for not being the traditional Grand-Pa who is available on a moments notice. I will be sending them gifts this year as finances will be better from mid-Nov. to mid. Dec. Why does it have to be so difficult leaving, but feel so much better when 2 hours down the hi-way.

Edward,
I think you're going to get a lot of responses to this posting!
I, too have a problem. I have two young grandchildren in England. Next time I see them they'll probably be graduating or getting married!

That is definitely one of the major trade offs of the traveling lifestyle. But, if you want to live it, you have to bite the bullet.
We just left this morning from a 10 day family visit, and it is tough pulling away, but you're right, it feels better when you're 2 hours down the road.
Everything we do in life involves trade offs of one kind or another. All in all, we think this lifestyle warrants them. As my friend Doug says -

We have never found leaving a problem. I know, I have been called hard hearted but I raised my three children pretty much by myself and I raised them to be their own persons, make their own decisions and by the time they left home I was confident they were ready to take on whatever life handed them. All three are productive society members with good jobs, homes and families of their own.
Yes we love our Grand Children, but it is not our responsibility to raise them or to care for them. If they want to come visit us, we make arrangements to get them to wherever we are at the moment, and when we go through the area they live in we always enjoy stopping by and spending time with them. They are all active in school and have many things to do that don't include grandma and grandpa. I guess my definition of a regular grand parent is different than many others, but we have our lives to live and so do our children and grand children. If it came to an emergency that we needed to be there for, we are never that far away that we could not get to them.
We have grand children from 4 years of age to 17 years of age, some enjoy seeing us, some don't, just part of life.
Happy RVing.

Junglejim0745 you took the words right out of my mouth. Glad to know I'm not the only hard hearted guy out there

I understand your difficulty and I don't think it is trivial. Saying good bye is hard because we love them and sometimes knowing we can get to them a in a couple hours is a security thing. I know saying goodbye to my young adult sons was very hard. On the other hand I only have this one life to live and this is something I really want to do. I think remembering that the world is really a small place and if you needed to get back it might not be 2 hours by car but an airport is always close enough to get you back from just about anywhere. Phones, Skype, email, blogs, and Facebook can help you stay in touch. This is a great lifestyle so get creative on how to keep in touch. Good luck and happy travels.
