We're setting out on September 13th which happily isn't a Friday. First trip is kayaking down the eastern seaboard with the goal of being in Largo Florida by early October for a 90th birthday party.
Only problem is I can't find any campgrounds near Largo or St. Petersburg where we could be for 4 days and go back and forth to the family.
Can anyone offer suggestions. Tried RV Park Reviews but they have none listed for either of those cities and I don't know Florida well enough to know if anything they do have listed is close.
Hope you can help
Many thanks in advance, Sherry

How about Fort Desoto at the tip of St Pete?
It's a GREAT campground and park and has great kayaking, bicycling, fishing, sunset viewing.
Sorry I haven't figured how to post an active link here.
On the website there are actual pictures of each campsite, but you have to dig a little to find them. It's a little pricey, but is a great place!
If you need any kayaking suggestions in Florida, let me know. We used to live there and there are lots of great places to go.

Sherry,
I put in Largo Florida and RV Park Reviews list 4 campgrounds there. There are 2 listed in St Petersburg also. I think you are doing something wrong.

Sherry, go to http://www.rvfamilyfun.com/index.html Click on the St. Pete Area (several times) when you get down small enough campgrounds and service centers start showing up. Most have some kind of review, at least you have some names to start an internet search. Good Luck

Thanks so much for the help. Fred you were correct, I wasn’t doing it right. I was choosing a state and looking through the cities rather than searching in detail.
Flyone I tried the site you sent and clicked several times and the area on the map kept getting smaller and smaller and I found an icon very near where I was going to be but couldn’t find it in the list of campgrounds etc that showed up on the left.
BUTthanks to Karen I found Fort Desoto which even though it is 30 minutes from where the family is gathering is such a GREAT looking place that I went ahead and made a reservation for 4 nights blowing a full third of my monthly campground budget. Gonna require some serious boondocking and I don’t have solar yet. SIGH…….
Thanks again to you all….what a great group with such great information! And such fast responses. RV-Dreams is definitely the place to get help, information and friendship.

Sherry, glad to know you found Fort DeSoto. I don't think you'll be disappointed. If you go down to the furthest end of the beach, north end, I think, you can park in the parking lot and walk over to the beach. There are some shade trees and you can put your kayaks in right there. You may get lucky and see some Rosette Spoonbills! If you got a waterfront site, you may also be able launch the kayaks from your site. Bring your bicycles too, there is a nice trail.

Sorry I didn't see this post earlier.....I am from Largo FL. Ft Desoto is a nice choice....but I bet nobody told you that you are going to have to pay the toll everytime you come and go from the park. St Petersburg has set it up that way. You will pay a toll everytime you come back in the park. There was some talk about giving permits to people who were staying at the campground, but as off April 2010 it had not been passed. I believe the toll is $1.00. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but I thought you should know ahead of time. Hope you enjoy your trip

Postal Pair you are totally right that I had no idea it would be $2 a day to come and go once. Don't think I'd cancel my reservation for that but Fort Desoto is 30 min from the location on Belcher Road where I'll be going. For future reference do you have any other campground suggestions in the area?
thanks, Sherry

I have a couple of campground for you......
Vacation Village/Sunburst Campground 6900 Ulmerton Road Largo (727) 531-5589 Near the corner of US 19 and Ulmerton Road. When we first got our 5th wheel we stayed here for about a year while hubby finished up his job before retirement. This is an OK place.....roads are OK....lots of potholes, but the park in general is nice. Nice pool and laundry is fine. Lots of nice restaurants around also. Also, this is a Passport America park and takes Good Sam discounts. Lee's Travel Park 1610 S. Belcher Road Largo (727) 536-2050 Only draw back to this park is the electric service. They only have 30amp....and at times it has issues. We had a friend of ours that had his surge protector on the pedestal outside and it fried it. That's why we stayed at Vacation Village. Lee's has a nice pool and you don't have to deal with the traffic on Ulmerton Road. Hope this helps.....if you need anything else, let me know....

I would stick with Ft Desoto.. It is a great park, although no sewer.. I don't think the toll is $1 though unless it has gone up.. It is definately the best park in the area.

thanks Postalpair for the other suggestions, one of which is VERY close to the family gathering spot. For now I'm going with Fort Desoto but am very glad to have these other suggestions to look into for future visits.

Sherry,
If you are in the Largo area, just drive thru the campgrounds that I suggested to you. Both parks are open, no security....this way you can see which one will better serve your needs in the future. Have a wonderful and safe trip to Florida....
