I don't know quite where to put this but in the AARP news this month there was a reference to a website for finding cheaper storage. It is www.sparefoot.com
I found it quite helpful. I looked at storage in my city of San Jose Ca and found the cheapest (big storage place) cost around $140 give or take for a 10X10. By looking at other cities not very far away I found spaces by the same chain for as little as $67.
When considering long term storage, driving a few miles to put stuff there doesn't seem a hardship.
Were not on the road yet, but may be someday.

Craigslist also has a Parking /Storage heading. You can find some good bargains there.

What we did instead of renting a storage unit we bought a cargo trailer. We are keeping it at our sons house. We figure once we are done with it, we can then sell it.

If you do decide to rent space, take a very close look at where you will store stuff. First, are the premises clean? Are the actual rental spaces clean and well lighted? How is the staff: friendly or indifferent?
Try to be there long enough to see a couple of people go in and out. Talk to them to see if they like it.
AND most important. The storage facility DOES NOT insure your belongs unless you pay for the coverage.
I worked for three years at an upscale self storage facility.
Oh, and one more thing. If you see rodent traps. Turn around and leave immediately. That is a very BAD sign.

Excellent advice.
As for the cargo trailer, that is a good one also, but we don't have anyone to leave it with, or park it at. I might just keep it in mind and look into the cost of parking one at a long term place, much like when people store their large RV's.
Many options, just hope we don't have much to store.

We thought of this too....but with tags and insurance on another trailer...not sure it would be cost effective.

Another option is to purchase a used cargo container. They are available in 8' T by 8' wide by 20' or 40' long. Cost in this area for one in reasonable condition is around $2000. You will have to pay to have it delivered but no tires, license, etc required. They hold their value well so should be able to get your money back a few years down the road.
