On our way to the RV-Dreams rally, it appears we will be on the road between Gatlinburg, TN but not yet to Myrtle Beach, SC on Easter weekend.
Since it is Easter weekend, we figure we better find someplace we can make reservations.
We'd like to find someplace about half way, maybe just north or near Columbia, SC.
Anyone have any ideas?

My old stomping grounds. I like Dreher Island State Park. It is located in Prosperity, SC and right on the shores of Lake Murray. I grew up on Lake Murray, it's a great place to visit. My poor boat is still in storage @ Dreher Island.

Thanks so much, Mark and Nancy,
Just made reservations for Easter weekend. Looks like they are filling up fast with few sites of 40 foot left.
Really appreciate the input.

Happy to help. I take it you made reservations @ Dreher Island? There is a little country store on State Park Road called "The Station" (a good friend of mine owns it) and it is only 2-3 miles from the park. They have fuel, groceries, bait, etc. and the prices are reasonable. If you are coming in on I-26 you will go thru a small town called Chapin, there are several large supermarkets and tons of great restaurants. I would highly recommend you try out Farm Boy's Barbeque, they have some of the best food around but they are only open Thursday-Saturday. I hope ya'll have a great time.

Wow, thanks a lot!!
We LOVE bbq so will certainly try out Farmboy since we will be there Fri-Sun.
Yes, we did make reservations. Since it is Easter weekend we figured it might get full and are glad we had your recommendation back so quickly since the availability of flat sites for 40 foot motorhomes is getting slim.
We will probably head in to Chapin on Saturday to search out wifi since I will have a difficult time going 3 days without my fix of the internet!!
Thanks again for being so helpful. Hope we get to meet down the road.

I lived in Columbia area for six years. Check out Barnyard in Lexington.
Thanks, TxRvr!
We'd already made reservations at Dreher Island based on previous recommendation but will check out Barnyard too while there since this is a part of the country we are hoping to visit again!

I recommended Barnyard because it's closer to Columbia not realizing you were going to stay more than one nite. I too like Dreher. Unless they've made some recent changes, they only have 30A electrical service. Shouldn't need ac in April anyway.
Also recommend D's Wings resturants. There are several around town. Lunch or dinner.
As for the BBQ, you should know that it's a chopped pork variety with mustard base sauce. I loved living in SC, but we did suffer BBQ withdrawal symptoms. You see here in Texas, our BBQ brisket comes from COWS.

Thanks TXRver!!
From what we've seen you are right, Dreher only has 30amp but like you mentioned that is only an issue when we need A/C so we didn't care.
We understand about the bbq!! We lived in NC for a couple of years and understand about the difference in bbq. We have never heard of a 'pig pickin' until we were in NC!!
Thanks for the D's Wings recommendation. We are always looking for good places to eat.

we are also headed to Columbia SC- but not until July.
we are looking to possibly build or buy a house on lake Murray someday, so we want to spend a few weeks there in the heat of the summer, to see if we can "take it".
we booked the maximum 14 days at Dreher, which will allow us to explore the lake thoroughly in our dinghy-but we'll probably stay another week or so beyond that, so we'll look at the Barnyard in Lexington.
I am guessing we'll spend a lot of time with realtors as well...
great information!
thanks!

Soos,
Check out these real estate offices in Chapin, SC. If you have children I would consider the Chapin side of Lake Murray (Lexington/Richland 5 school district) but if schools are not a factor then I would look on the Newberry side since the property taxes are much lower. Dreher Island is in Newberry County too. We lived there for 42 years so PM me if you have any questions about the area.

thanks again- we will definately give your guy a call- when we were there last year we contacted a realtor and every property she showed us was 50%+ higher priced than our budget. very frustrating- while there we did notice that Russell and Jeffcoat seemed to be the hopping agency, so I am glad to have a name to go with it!
Sue PS- no kids, so property taxes will be our biggest concern- that and access to civilization in case we decide to work for a few years (hahaahaha).
