Hello Everyone! This is our first post to your site and we are very impressed with the wonderful people on this forum. We are an Army family of three and are contemplating full time RV life. We have been RVing for a good long time now, but only as a way to get out of Dodge and away from the world of Chaplain Ministry for a weekend. However, we are finding ourselves more and more in love with RVing and wonder if we could do it full time while in the Army. Well, they certainly move us enough that buying a house is nearly pointless and renting is difficult to swallow. I figure after the last 10 years of paying rent we could have purchased one nice RV. We are off to Ft. Hood this summer for yet another move and frankly it would be nice to take our home with us. The RV we have now is probably not large enough for full time living with the three of us, but it is a NICE trailer. We would have to make some changes, like get a 5th wheel, yes we already know the one we want and my tundra would have to get traded as well and I love that truck! Our next frustration would be finding a place in the Ft. Hood area that would have us for a few years, or I guess we could always pack up shop and move across town every few months, that might keep things interesting!! Anyway, looking forward in learning tons from all of you and who knows...maybe this summer we will be full timers!! - Blessings - Chaplain Troy

We are reitred military and always look at each post on our way to see if they have an RV park. I'm not sure what the rules are for staying for an extended period, but something to look into. Most of the military rv parks are quite nice.

Go to Google and type in Fort Hood+Famcamp. I am not sure about the how long you can take advantage of the famcamp, but I do know there is one on Lake Belton, just outside Fort Hood. I am sure something can be worked out to help you. You can also use RVParkreviews.com for your location for suggestions. Then, it is called negotiation to get a rate you can live with. Long term, certain income sometimes moves negotiations to a workable area from an owner.
Unless your RV is a teardrop, I betcha it is big enough for 3. We had a 15 yr old grandson with us in a 28 ft trailer for 4 months while I was working away from home base. Did just fine. While we were building a house in Colorado, we lived in a 26 ft trailer (no slides) for 6 months with a 16 yr old daughter. Did fine there too.

Welcome to the group Troy. We've also been looking in the Ft. Hood, Killeen, Belton, and Temple area for a long term place to stay. No we're not active military, but a Navy vet. Our son lives in the Temple area and works for Sprint. We're missing out on the grandson's early years. So when we start fulltiming in 2012 striaght for Texas we'll go. There are several COE campgrounds around Lake Belton and Still Hollow Lake. On the southwest side of Ft. Hood there is another large lake but I can't think of the name.

Nothing great but only 5 minutes from the base. There was also a real nice mobile home/rv park there but it was for long term only. http://www.elmgrovemhc.com/community.htm ,but at a $190 bucks a month !

Hey, Chaplain Troy! Glad to have you here. I can't help you with your issues of where to put a trailer if you decide to try it as a living place in your new assignment, but I can wish you the best. I'm retiring from the active ordained ministry this year after 43 years of it. Looking forward to doing some RV traveling in the summer when my wife is not teaching. She has a few years yet before retirement. We've talked about fulltiming, but right now we're just setting for a few long trips and several short ones. Blessings on your continued ministry.

Let me add to the other suggestions. Check out mobile home parks as well.
Jo and I will be living in our dream RV when we get our home sold here in Oklahoma City, but we're not ready to retire yet. Our hope is to continue working until the truck and RV are paid off. Thus, we will possibly be staying in one place for a number of years. We have found a mobile home park that also allows RV's of just about every kind. The facility we are looking at even serves as a drop off point for mail and packages in the office of the park.
Just a thought.

You can do a Google Search for Mobile Home parks in Killeen or other towns near Ft. Hood. Many of them allow RV's..and their spaces for the units are larger than those in an RV park. When traveling, we often stay in one.
Since you could be stationed in a town for a long while...this would be good for you and your family.

To all my new friends,
What a blessing to have all of your experience in my life. Thank you all for the info and the support. We are finding that getting a new trailer and truck is a difficult process as we just bought new last year. I love my current truck - Toyota Tundra and our current trailer Jayco Octane. I am not sure the Octane is able to support a fulltime living condition, but maybe for a year we could do it and knock-out some of the negative equity.
Thanks again to all of you and we look forward in reading more great info and learning from your expertise!
