For you folks that read Motorhome magazine, I wanted to mention that I say on RV.net that Gaylord Maxwell passed away on Sat. Sept. 20th. I for one will miss the insite and humor of his articles. I wish his family my condolences

In May of the year we attended "Life On Wheels" in Bowling Green, KY. We met Gaylord there and even won autographed book written by him. At this point in time we wonder what will become of LOW as he was the man behind it. He was a pioneer in the camping world and will truely be missed.

Regarding Life On Wheels (LOW), Gaylord was making arrangements with the RV Safety Education Foundation (RVSEF) to take over operation of the conferences.
It was characterized as a merger when we were instructors in 2006, but RVSEF reported it as a purchase. However, I never found any confirmation that the deal went through and, according to Nick Russell's blog, the deal never came to fruition.
Nick doesn't know the fate of LOW but says he is not optimistic about anyone stepping in. That would be a real shame.

Gaylord was pretty much one of a kind. He has provided so much for so many in the form of encouragement, knowledge and above all a zest for life. Gaylord and Margie possessed a passion for LOW and in a way, LOW possessed Gaylord. It was his life! The people, the friendships, knowing he was doing what he wanted to do - giving back to an industry and a way of life that had given so generously to him.
Gaylord and I talked for nearly an hour at LOW in Bowling Green 2007. Actually, he talked, and I listened. In fact, I defaulted to this time with him rather than go to the classroom I had chosen. I am so glad I did.
Extremely high on his priority of things he wanted to put in place before his life ended, was preparing a continuance for LOW. Pragmatically, there is no one who could follow in his footsteps and maintain the structure he mandated that LOW would maintain.
Others have expressed well how the industry's support has deminished with the downturn of the RV market. Since LOW was Gaylord's life, it more likely than not has passed on as has he.
It is quite possible in reading what others have written, some being instructors for LOW, that the concept of how LOW was structured can no longer work.
For those who regret not being able to attend, have faith, I am confident there will be some program to fill the void, but totally different.
Thanks to the world we had Gaylord Maxwell while we did.

Pam and I attended the Aug LOW conference in Harrisburg, PA. We were impressed by many things about the conference. We appreciated what a passion he had for the RV lifestyle. In his opening remarks he encouraged us to pursue our dreams regardless of how the economy looked and recalled similar issues in the early 70's. In his closing remarks he challenged us to give back to others and to determine our purpose in pursuing the RV lifestyle. He leaves quite a legacy.
