Hi Everyone. Well, after 15 years the RV-Dreams Community Forum is coming to an end. Since it began in August 2005, we've had 58 Million page views, 124,000 posts, and we've spent about $15,000 to keep this valuable resource for RVers free and open. But since we are now off the road and have settled down for the next chapter of our lives, we are taking the Forum down effective June 30, 2021. It has been a tough decision, but it is now time.

We want to thank all of our members for their participation and input over the years, and we want to especially thank those that have acted as Moderators for us during our amazing journey living and traveling in our RV and growing the RV-Dreams Family. We will be forever proud to have been founders of this Forum and to have been supported by such a wonderful community. Thank you all!!

Smelly sinks

We have been living in our driveway in our MH.  When running water in the sink the water and the drain stinks.

There should be a vacuum breaker under the sink, which can fail and when replaced will fix this problem. These are available at any hardware store. They are normally black and look like a vent cap.

Might be just some gunk built up in the trap…I solve this by pouring a cup of bleach diluted with a cup of water in…letting it sit awhile and then flushing a couple gallons of water down it. After that a half cup of baking soda down the drain and a little water to make it wet…let it sit a couple hours and flush again.

If it's the water coming out of the tap that stinks then you'll need to sanitize the fresh water tank…you should have instructions for this in your manual but essentially it involves using the winterization hose and the water pump to pump some diluted bleach from a bucket into the fresh water tank then filling the tank. Let it sit overnight and then run enough water through each tap to smell the chlorine. Then dump fresh water, flush, and refill.

Our pipe from our first sink goes sideways to hook into the 2nd sink pipe before draining down. So consequently stuff built up in the sideways pipe. Hubby took it all apart and we cleaned them out (and it was gross) and all has been well since.

And one more for us is when the galley is open to the sewer which we do sometimes cause it fills the fastest, allows for some smell to come through a little bit.

Warmly, Kim

Yeah…ours does too…the smaller right hand sink drains over to the main drain under the larger left one. I don't think they put in enough slope on the crossover pipe and it doesn't have a trap like the main one does so it fills up with gunk and smells. A little bleach and then some baking soda does the trick, I'll have to dig out my pipe snake and see if it needs some cleaning out as well.

What others have said. You also could have some build-up in the incoming water lines (and/or fixtures) going to the sink. What Neil proposed (i.e., using bleach to clean the fresh tank) or using a bottle of Purogene (available at the WaterFilterStore.com) to clean the fresh water tank and also run through the plumbing system (i.e., running some of the bleach or Purogene through the fixtures) can make a difference.
