Life Vest for Inflatable Kayak

We decided to get an inflatable Kayak to be used on flat water, easy rivers and light fishing.

Does anyone have a recommendation for a life vest?  Under $80 would be our budget.

My husband and I have 25+ years of canoeing experience - mostly on flat water - lakes and rivers.  The best advice I can give is to find a PFD (personal flotation device) that is comfortable and fits you well.  If it is comfortable - then you will wear it.  A PFD is something you should try on before you buy - or - buy it from a website where it can easily be returned.

If you Google "personal flotation device" you will find many, many options including discounted PFD's at places like backcountry.com.  Amazon and REI also carry PFD's - but I am not sure how much they are discounted.  PFD's are made gender-specific - so what works for a man, will not work for a woman.  Stohlquist and Astral are two popular models - but there are others that are good.  Do some research and hopefully you will find the perfect PFD.  Happy fishing.

As a side note - we ordered an inflatable kayak - it was delivered yesterday, and we can't wait to try it out.

Barb, thank you for the quick response.

We ordered the Sea Eagle 385 FastTrack with the deluxe (blow-up) seats. I’m not sure yet how tall the seats are. I’m confused between the high back vests and general purpose vests but know freedom of movement will be important.

Small world - we ordered the Sea Eagle 385 Fast Track as well.  Since it arrived yesterday, it's still in the box.  Hope to get a look at it over the weekend.

We're on track to start full-timing in the fall of 2017 and we hope to use the Sea Eagle frequently - as we both love to paddle.

As far as PFD's - don't worry about whether it is a long or short vest - just pick one that you are comfortable with.  If it's not comfortable, you won't wear it and thus defeats the purpose of purchasing a PFD.

Good luck!

We have a Sea Eagle Fast Track and the SeaEagle life vests. We're happy with both.
