Air Compressor

We recently purchased a 5th wheel (Landmark) and intend to full time mid-2017.  We are slowly looking at the accessories we will need - and we would like your thoughts and recommendations about air compressors.  Do you recommend gas or electric - and why?  Any information you can provide will be helpful.  Thanks.

I have a Viaire RV model. Works well ... a little pricey, but powerful and runs off house battery power via alligator clips. This is the one recommended by the "RV Geeks".

Agree with the Viaire. I have one also and run off the truck battery. It has no tank required, and pumps the higher pressures for trailer tires (125 on our H series tired).

We have this PORTER-CABLE CMB15 150 PSI 1.5 Gallon Oil-Free Fully Shrouded Compressor.

We added a tire inflator with a gauge - Campbell Hausfeld MP6000 Tire Inflator with Gauge - and replaced the flimsy plastic hose with a heavier duty hose.

Howard - thanks - this is one of the compressors we are looking at.  Hubby and I are having a difference of opinion regarding a gas or electric compressor.  Your feedback helps!

This is the unit we use. www.harborfreight.com/air-tools/air-compressors/6-gal-15-hp-150-psi-professional-air-compressor-62380.html
It is a 6 gallon electric 150 PSI. Found it on sale $99.00 and we had a $20 off coupon. So our final cost is $79.00. We keep it in our basement of our 2004 Newmar Dutch Star.

We've got the same one as Howard for the past two years. Works great, light enough for us and is holding up very well. I ditched the coil hose and kept my 25' rubber one from the house compressor when we went F.T.
Money well spent.

Such a huge tank seems excessive, but without more info as it's use, it would be hard to say one way or the other.

As to your question about his sanity.... not going to touch that one.

We have/use one almost identical to Howard's (just a different brand). One thing I learned growing up on my Dad's Texaco service station driveway is that, without a tank, you end up pumping a lot more moisture (which condenses into water) into your tires. If this builds up enough, you end up with balance problems and tire damage from internal water. Compressors with tanks have a drain valve on the bottom to drain the water that collects in the tank when the air is compressed.

Can someone clarify for me if the The Porter-Cable CMB15 air compressor runs off electric, 12V or gas powered? The specs on the link provided by Howard states gas powered. I am thinking I really don't want to be carrying gas around only for the air compressor.

  120 volts.  https://www.amazon.com/PORTER-CABLE-CMB15-Oil-Free-Shrouded-Compressor/dp/B006CVXGR0

BTW, this is all one really needs.  But the 150 psi is important for higher pressure tires such as "G" and most certainly "H." But one of these, at least by specs, is really necessary.  But nothing more.  This will also run air tools well enough on the road should that be desired.

I have a 27 ft fifth wheel [91} snowbird we have invested approx 20-25k into this rig it has what we want to do just about any camping in the woods without any hook ups ,and prepared for most any problem if you have a generator I suggest a small pancake compressor {porter cable} 150psi for 100-125 dollars bye itself it will pump up any of my tires on my truck or trailer no problem ! / on my back of my trailer ive had made a 2' x 8' basket my compressor is mounted and wired with my generator I have enough hose to reach to the front of my truck and ck pressure on a regular basis (very Important to maintain) my truck has a tire monitor that will bug me with a flat tire indicator ,if you go with a gas one a small one can cost you (good one) 700 plus , I buy Items that I can trust ! this is my suggestion Good luck ! Hi I mike air compressors take alot of power under 12 volt and they take a long time to build up pressure, most tires need 70 80 90 psi thats alot to ask from a 12 volt also you need a good bank of batteries

The Viair may take a lot of power (I really don't know), but it builds pressure quickly and easily pumps my tires up to their 110 psi.

We recently got the one like Howard has. Lov it. We have a invertor so I can use it off grid. We were out in the desert recently and had a tire down. My neighbor wanted to show off his Vlair and I wasn't impressed with it. took forever to fill tire to 80lbs compared to the Porter Cable.
