Great Lakes and Seaway Trail

We will be taking a trip in July and August with a new 5th wheel to Niagara Falls and then following the Great Lakes Seaway Trail up to the 1000 Islands.  Has anyone done this trip and have any advice for inexperienced RVer's?  We have the following questions:

  • We are concerned about low clearance bridges (13'8" high) and narrow curvy roads (38' fiver) as well as avoiding big city traffic?
  • Are there any bridge restrictions or other RV restrictions going into Canada?
  • We already have campground reservations at Niagara Falls, but do we need reservations way ahead of time for the Great Lakes Seaway Trail and 1000 Islands?   Or can we just plan and reserve a day or so ahead as we are traveling?
  • There seems to be lots to see and do on this route.... what are the "can't miss" things?   We enjoy just about anything while traveling.

Thanks for your input on this!

Barb and Tom

Definately go to the beautiful town "Niagara on the Lake" on the Canadian side.  Also Welland canal and lock system is fascinating!

Avoid the Lake Ontario state parkway.  A horrendous road in disrepair.  You can google information on that road and the problems with repairing.  There is even talk about closing it entirely!

Thanks for the good information Jane and Frank. We will definitely add Niagara on the Lake and the Welland Canal to our must-do list.

Is it the whole parkway that's so bad? Where should we get on and off if we are following the Great Lakes Seaway Trail? And what's the best alternative route to follow?

Also, any thoughts about the best way to get through Buffalo? I understand RV's aren't allowed on part of the Robert Moses Parkway, but I don't know which part. We are camping in the Lewiston KOA in Youngstown....

Thanks for your help!
