Hi Everyone. Well, after 15 years the RV-Dreams Community Forum is coming to an end. Since it began in August 2005, we've had 58 Million page views, 124,000 posts, and we've spent about $15,000 to keep this valuable resource for RVers free and open. But since we are now off the road and have settled down for the next chapter of our lives, we are taking the Forum down effective June 30, 2021. It has been a tough decision, but it is now time.


We want to thank all of our members for their participation and input over the years, and we want to especially thank those that have acted as Moderators for us during our amazing journey living and traveling in our RV and growing the RV-Dreams Family. We will be forever proud to have been founders of this Forum and to have been supported by such a wonderful community. Thank you all!!

He said that it had leaked it's freon out because there is oil on the roof. Now he's saying it could be the black control box inside. The new unit is set to 70 degrees, and once today, while it was about 80 degrees inside, it turned off.

It's a 13.5 Airxcel http://www.americanrvcompany.com/Coleman-48203C966-63134-Mach-3-Plus-Air-Conditioner-Upper-Unit-White-13500-BTU-Trailer-Camper-RV

He wants to swap out the black control box for $107 tomorrow, could that be the cause of the low temps and single cut out?

Note: We are sitting in direct sunlight, no shade anywhere. My inside/outside thermometer is registering about a 1.5 degree difference. The outside temp sensor is in the shade on the non sun side of the RV, so it's a few degrees hotter than it's probably registering.

What are my options here?

Did the technician perform a Delta T test after the install?  You can google Delta T test to see what this is.  It is very simple to perform and it will tell you if the AC is performing up to standard.

Also, make sure your return air vent filter/s are clean.  Just keeping them clean will make a big difference.  These need to be cleaned often as RV's tend to be very dusty.  I clean mine every couple of weeks.

I hope it is a simple thing and doesn't cost you anymore.

not going to get Technical on you.......so there should at least be a 25 deg. differential between inside and outside........if the problem is intermittent.......open the a/c from the inside .....(Make sure power is off at the panel!!)

find thermostat bulb....looks like a big thermocouple......follow to its control box and pull the 2 wires off , make a jumper and connect the 2 together.......go turn the breaker back on and set the wall thermostat to a/c on........is unit now chilling after 5 minutes of run? .....if this is a new unit.....odds are bad wall thermostat......old unit.....faulty thermostat control on unit itself....



I have 40 years in the HVAC industry this is basic troubleshooting......get rid of that repairman !!!!

I too have over 40 years in HVAC/R and totally agree with Lucky Mike, get rid of that parts changer.

The parts changer took advantage of us because we were passing through, and we passed through by now. I looked in the AC for anything like you described, and didn't see anything, but in the thermostat I did. I bypassed it like you said, but no change.

I'm about 20 minutes from a camping world, I was thinking of replacing the thermostat and inside cover for the AC. The cover doesn't screw flat to the ceiling, leaking cool air out the side near the kitchen. Hopefully these two things will get it a bit colder.

So sorry to hear about the bad experience with your a/c! 

I loved your homeschooling story:) we home educated our 5 children and loved the experience! Road school is fabulous especially for younger children. The more they experience means they can relate better to what they read later. You should check out Sonlight Curriculum, it's for the more relaxed experience:)

Well, another $1200 later and we're running cold! It was a 13.5 that he swapped in and we needed a 15k unit to cool this large RV. Now we have two AC's and it's cooling well. Thanks everyone, and sorry for the bonehead post.

Thanks DeeJee for the post. We how have two little ones that will be homeschooled, one is just approaching school age, and we're having a good time with home education :) I'll google Sonlight Curriculum now.
