Hi Everyone. Well, after 15 years the RV-Dreams Community Forum is coming to an end. Since it began in August 2005, we've had 58 Million page views, 124,000 posts, and we've spent about $15,000 to keep this valuable resource for RVers free and open. But since we are now off the road and have settled down for the next chapter of our lives, we are taking the Forum down effective June 30, 2021. It has been a tough decision, but it is now time.


We want to thank all of our members for their participation and input over the years, and we want to especially thank those that have acted as Moderators for us during our amazing journey living and traveling in our RV and growing the RV-Dreams Family. We will be forever proud to have been founders of this Forum and to have been supported by such a wonderful community. Thank you all!!

tailgate cables

I have a 2001 F350 that has the 5th wheel tailgate.  The tailgate has no markers to let me know who the manufacturer is.  I'd like to get new tailgate cables for my truck but the problem is the shoulder bolt on the tailgate takes a 7/16 socket and the cable is ~19" long.  The ford cable is 21" long and is made to go on a bigger shoulder bolt.  I'm having a rough time finding a cable that would work.  I've also tried to just find the parts so as to make my own but have not had any luck.  Was wondering if there are those who have been through this that can lend some advice.

I'd venture that if no one is answering your first posting of this, it probably means that no one has had the experience with those cables.  If you know who the original owner of the truck was, you might ask them whether they built their own tailgate, of if not, where they might have purchased it.  I'd think that if if was purchased, there would be some kind of identification on the tailgate, perhaps on that part that is at the bottom of the tailgate and facing away from you when looking.  It might be nothing more than a small metal plate attached to the tailgate.

When I ordered my 5th wheel tailgate I had to specify the truck year and model. The tailgate came equipped with the correct hardware so I could use the existing cables.

If you have access to a fabricator/welding shop they could modify cables to work.
