Hi Everyone. Well, after 15 years the RV-Dreams Community Forum is coming to an end. Since it began in August 2005, we've had 58 Million page views, 124,000 posts, and we've spent about $15,000 to keep this valuable resource for RVers free and open. But since we are now off the road and have settled down for the next chapter of our lives, we are taking the Forum down effective June 30, 2021. It has been a tough decision, but it is now time.

We want to thank all of our members for their participation and input over the years, and we want to especially thank those that have acted as Moderators for us during our amazing journey living and traveling in our RV and growing the RV-Dreams Family. We will be forever proud to have been founders of this Forum and to have been supported by such a wonderful community. Thank you all!!

What size TV

We are about to replace our TV (in our S&B as we do not have out RV yet), and we want to buy one that we can use when we buy our RV. What is a reasonable size that will fit in a 36' - 40' Class A? Thank you all in advance for the advice.

All depends where it is being mount. Hard to plan ahead on this one.
Bigger is better if you have the space

If you are sitting 6ft away from a 42".. .. it seems like a 70".. If you do a 70".. it will be too big.. ever try and sit in the front row at a movie theater.. I'd say a 55" would be great..

Definition is the name of the game .. not size... for RV's ..my .02

My current 46" is going out (dark streaks) and I'm looking for a new RV compatible TV too. My main concern is low power usage for boondocking.

I'm looking at this 58" Samsung: www.walmart.com/ip/Samsung-58-1080p-60Hz-LED-Smart-HDTV-UN58H5202AFXZA/39405699

Walmart has it for $698. Though it's only a 60 hz model its "clarity of motion rate" is 120. The reviews are very good for a TV in this price range, but the best part is that it is very efficient, ranking at the top of the energy star efficiency chart. The energy star sticker says the estimated yearly energy cost is only $9/yr (about 43 watts of power draw) - about 1/2 of what my current 46" model uses - great for off-grid use. For comparison, this 50" Vizio, also a relatively energy efficient TV, uses almost twice the power of the larger Samsung. www.target.com/p/vizio-50-class-1080p-120hz-e-series-full-array-led-smart-tv-black-e500i-b1/-/A-14408504

I think you need to visit some RV dealers and check out the arrangements of where the TV's are located to really get an idea of what size you need.  We can all name off sizes, but in your final decision, it may not apply at all.  Perhaps for your S&B, you ought to go to a Goodwill or Salvation Army store and buy a used one.

Then, when you get your RV, even if what you buy won't fit, you wouldn't be out quite so much money.

Chip, if your heart is set on the Samsung, just remember to pay attention the codes for the TV. Samsung uses a "lottery" system to source their TV screens, Their codes tell you who made the TV (screen). You'll want a Samsung with a screen made by Samsung(blacker blacks, colors not as washed out) as opposed to, say, Sharp which is one of their suppliers. Sorry I don't have more info, but you can probably google it.  If you watch a lot of sports or TV shows with action sequences, you may find the 60Hz TVs produce a poorer quality picture. FWIW. Samsung (and others) advertize higher clarity motion index... it's really technobabble. Internal ciruitry to compensate for the lower refresh rate of the screen. If picture quality is truly important to you... you may be disappointed. But don't go the other end and get Ultra HD... nobody is producing content for them yet so they would be a waste of money. Higher Hz will usually result in higher power draw and I know that's important to you so your choice will be a compromise of power consumption vs picture size and quality. Good luck in your search.

I would love to go check out RV layouts, but unfortunately (or fortunately depending on how you look at it), we currently reside in Hawaii and there are no RV's much less RV dealers here. We finally went to Costco last night and bought a Sony Bravio 48" smart TV. It is big enough for what we need it for now, and small enough that we should be able to find a place for it in our RV (We hope). Thanks again everyone for he input. I'm sure we will have many more questions before we are finally on our way (and probably after).

Thanks for the reply BiggaRView,

Thanks for the tip on Samsung! I had no idea. Yes, life is a compromise. I'm watching a 60hz refresh rate screen now and am OK with it. I'm sure if I stepped up to a better model I wouldn't want to go back. I haven't tried heroin either, as I'm sure I'd love it - then I'd have to have it. biggrin With my failing eyesight I'd rather have a bigger screen than a higher refresh rate for a roughly equal energy budget. This is why I recently bought a PC with only a 15w CPU.

I'll find room for it by using a swing out bracket, so I can swing it out of the way of whatever it obstructs while in use.
