Solar install - Home Energy Credit?

Started working on our Federal income taxes today, didn't take near as long as last year when we sold the house, donated boatloads of "stuff" to charity etc.  One more big advantage to this full time RV life smile

However, I do have one question that some of you might have dealt with when you had solar installed.  We had a solar install in May of 2014 by AM Solar. My understanding is that solar does qualify for the Home Energy Credit.  I entered the info and they wanted the address of the home to which the improvement was made.  Do you just use your mail forwarding address?  It's really the only address we have, but seems a little weird to use that for a "home" that hasn't been in SD for over a year now.

Thanks!

Dale & Ruth,

When I completed tthe solar install in 2013 we were already full timing and since the rig is our primary home we used our mail forwarding address which is the same we use for our tax returns. There specific forms to fill out and you can get them on Northern Arizona Wind and Solar's website.

Here is a link:

You should consult you tax professional to confirm what you can take.

Hope this helps,

Les

Thanks for bringing this up - we had solar installed on our rig after we closed on the house. I know we can get the credit, I called the IRS and asked them. You can even use it if you put solar on a vacation home. We are now using my parents FL address. Don't know how that will figure in, if at all. Definitely something to start thinking about.

That's what I'm going to do since its the only address we have. I guess we could use our sons address in Richmond but will use the mailing unless they ask questions.

Looks like they are going to extend the Solar Tax Credit past 2016 out to 2021 as part of the current Congressional budget agreement. That should be be good news for FTers looking to install on their rigs (or future FTers like us looking at 2019) if I understand the language in the legislation. May be some hoops to jump thru to be in compliance with the rules, but a 30% tax credit on an install is a nice incentive.
