Hi Everyone. Well, after 15 years the RV-Dreams Community Forum is coming to an end. Since it began in August 2005, we've had 58 Million page views, 124,000 posts, and we've spent about $15,000 to keep this valuable resource for RVers free and open. But since we are now off the road and have settled down for the next chapter of our lives, we are taking the Forum down effective June 30, 2021. It has been a tough decision, but it is now time.

We want to thank all of our members for their participation and input over the years, and we want to especially thank those that have acted as Moderators for us during our amazing journey living and traveling in our RV and growing the RV-Dreams Family. We will be forever proud to have been founders of this Forum and to have been supported by such a wonderful community. Thank you all!!

Personalized RV Signs

So, this may be a bit of a fluff topic -- but, nevertheless wanted to see where everyone is at on it -- What is your opinion/experience/personal possession with regard to personalized RV signs -- and by that I mean those signs that you sometimes see people posting outside their RVS once they have stopped in a community spot to stay for awhile and have it hanging outside their unit.  Sometimes the sign will just read their names, or sometimes the state they are from -- or sometimes even a funny/catchy saying.  Does anyone have a fun one that would like to share a picture of and/or a definitive opinion?  For example, does this promote community/interaction within the community or would you go as far to say that it presents a safety issue?

Thank you for any banter/views that you may have to offer.

As a guy who makes these signs......you have stirred my thought process.....the amount of sayings and quirky ideas going on these pieces of wood is endless

as far as safety they are no more unsafe than calling your mate by name in hearing distance.....unless the wind is blowing and someone gets hit with that piece of wood that has your name on it....

I don't have a picture of it but we had a 4X4 post that I made up to look like a campground pedestal...electrical box, water spigot and cable TV connector. I would bury it in the ground at a boondocking spot and run hose, electric cord and TV cable from the RV to the fake pedestal. Everytime we put it out, more than a few folks asked how come we were able to get hook ups and they couldn't. I always told them we bring the hook ups with us.... blank stares while they tried to figure that one out....then the smiles would come.

Years later I saw an RV club that had similar pedestals with the names of the RV'ers and club name on it. Made all of their spots very distinctive whether they were boondocking or not.

I like them…but then we didn't get one of the "almost mass produced" ones that you see at RV shows…you know the ones that have the painting all done except for the name and then they paint your last name on it but they all look pretty much identical except for color scheme sometimes. I found on a blog I follow a lady in OH I believe that paints them and individualizes them for you. She asked us for photos of our rig and we talked back and forth a couple of times via email to get the design right. Mostly we wanted it to advertise our blog and have our names on it…having it out makes the park seem much more like a neighborhood than just a bunch of parking sites.

Cost more than the "almost mass produced" one did but not extravagantly more…ours was still under $200 with shipping and it's a lot more individual and personalized sign than most we see.

I enjoy the signs. They are a great icebreaker. Our sign is from our in-laws from years ago.  It it routed out --"The Nelson of Pekin". We want to make a cutout of Illinois to hang underneath with our first names. Just haven't gotten around to it.

We have one that says our names and also the logo of the United Methodist Church with NOMADS next to it. NOMADS is a mission of the UMC. We've had many people come to the rig and ask us about NOMADS. In just this park we are currently in, two couples have joined NOMADS after talking to us and look forward to doing 3 week projects. And we like that we will probably meet them again down the road.

That's funny. Back in 1974, long before the advent of cell phones, I had a new, red, VW Beetle. I tricked it out with an 8 track cassette and some killer speakers, and then I "installed" a real Ma Bell,  fire engine red telephone with a very long handset cord. (it was one of the new push button models). Out of sight near the driver's seat, I kept a very loud bicycle bell with a thumb pull ringer.

When I would pull up next to someone interesting at a stop light, I'd roll down my window, and start ringing the bell. (This worked better if we were stuck in traffic or at RR Crossings) I'd immediately start looking for the phone, and by then. the person in the car next to me was usually looking over to see what was going on. I'd put the phone on the dash where it could be seen, pick up the handset, and with the phone next to my ear, I'd say something like, "No, no ... I'm sorry, but I believe that you've got the wrong car. I think the person you're looking for is driving a (make and model of the car next to me). No, I'm sorry, but I don't have her number. Bye."

Then I'd turn to the victim of the prank and casually say. "I think it was for you." before driving off.

We have one of the signs. I have a friend that has a disabled son, and one of the things the son can do for a little money is make signs. I showed him a couple of examples and asked if he could get his son to make one for me. I felt good about helping this young man. To my surprise at my retirement luncheon, they gave me a sign that was made by him. It isn't the most perfect sign, but I wouldn't take a million dollars for it. It just has our first names, city and state. Our last name is very, very unique, so we did not want to include that.  It is held up by 2 solar lights on poles and we also put a solar spotlight on the sign so it shows up at night.

If I could figure out how to post a photo here, I would post a couple of photos of the sign during the day and at night.

 Pam,

First of all, welcome to the RV Dreams forums.  This is an excellent source of information about both RV's and the RV lifestyle.

As for posting pictures, up in the "Guidelines and Suggestions" category, there is a thread about posting photos.  Here is a direct link to the instructions that I posted to help folks that wanted to post pictures.  Just be sure that your images aren't too big.  With some of the high resolution digital cameras, an image that has too large of a file size causes the forum page to "stretch" out where one has to scroll right and left to view everything.

Thank you Terry. I don't have the photos on a site. I just have them stored on a removable drive. I was hoping that I could just upload them from the drive.

Thanks for the Welcome all. I haven't had time yet to extensively look through this forum, but from what I've seen so far, it is very informative. I LOVE getting new hints and tips for RVing.

I need a sign "Beware of attack cats". One will hiss at you and give you a full claw swat if you try to touch her, another one will run and glare, and the youngest will wrap around your leg and trip you. You also run the risk of stepping on a food or water bowl or, even worse, into a litter box. If you manage to get your sign posted, I'd love to see it.

I make personalized Rv signs as extra income and to stay busy. I was a wildlife artist for many years and before that a sign painter so it's a natural extension and keeps me in practice.

A couple years after we were married, my father routed out a cedar board with our names and last name, and put a routed edge on it. After many moves over 25 years, that sign had been put away and forgotten. However, about 12 years ago, we came across it in a box and, since we had started RVing, we painted the sign to match the trailer we had at that time, and we have been using the sign ever since. The sign is not perfect, but it is 38 years old, handmade by my father, and I would not think of using anything else. We touch up the paint every couple years and it is a perfect fit to hang from the hitch of our fifth wheel.
