Hi Everyone. Well, after 15 years the RV-Dreams Community Forum is coming to an end. Since it began in August 2005, we've had 58 Million page views, 124,000 posts, and we've spent about $15,000 to keep this valuable resource for RVers free and open. But since we are now off the road and have settled down for the next chapter of our lives, we are taking the Forum down effective June 30, 2021. It has been a tough decision, but it is now time.


We want to thank all of our members for their participation and input over the years, and we want to especially thank those that have acted as Moderators for us during our amazing journey living and traveling in our RV and growing the RV-Dreams Family. We will be forever proud to have been founders of this Forum and to have been supported by such a wonderful community. Thank you all!!

Tolls pulling a camper?


When you go thru toll booths on the interstate towing a camper, can you use the EZPass only lane (if you have an EZPass biggrin ) and be charged the correct amount, or do you have to use a booth that has a person?

According to the EZ Pass website, the equipment will correctly identify your vehicle.  It does say that if this will be a regular occurance, please request the correct transponder to match your rig.

I know you asked about EZ Pass, but Sunpass (Florida and the website now says North Carolina) needs all vehicles registered, but will count the axles on its own. I mention Sunpass because in many places they have no people, if you don't have a pass they photograph your license and send you a bill with extra fees. We have the Sunpass with suction cups so we can move it between our car and motorhome. Slick.

I have the EZpass for my tow vehiclle and when I inquired about the same combo I was told that it will work but you should go to the website and list all of the vehicles(including trailers) that will be using the transponder.  When using the transponder then it will work with just the tow vehicle or when towing a trailer.

 Can I run the fifth wheel on the suncoast highways?  with the stick on sunpass? 

 

Been checking all their websites .. can't find and weight limits, or rules..

Yes you can run on the toll roads in FL. Just make sure you have enough on your account. For us to roll thru Orlando twice was about $55-60.
No issues with the booths at exit ramps. Just follow the big rigs.

 Thanks.. From where I am.. I would have to go straight down 19.. that would be a nightmare with traffic, or go all the way over to 275... It's $20 one way to take the 589 suncoast down.. That will work for me.

NY is the only state I know of that's different. In NY, if you have EZPass, it doesn't pick up the number of axles automatically. When going onto the toll road, we go through a manned booth and the tollworker puts in a manual adjustment for the number of axles. Then when getting off, we can go through the unmanned booth.

TOMMASO: I would keep a metal box or lead lined pouch to put the other transponder in so it does not register by accident and get charged twice. A former tow truck driver told me that.

A couple of tips/tidbits on EZpass from a NYer who used it for over 12 years.

 

a) there are at least 4-10 DIFFERENT agencies all issuing ezpasses (transponders or tags) , all with SLIGHTLY different rules.

1) in NY, Port Authority issues tags and collects tolls between NY and NJ (hudson river).   They have no toll-booth barriers, and were the first people to introduce EZPass.

2) Also, in NY state, is the MTA (metro. Transit authority, also runs nyc subways--dont ask--)They cover EVERYTHING in NYC (and Long Island) that has a bridge or tunnel

THEY have toll booth barriers, and you MUST stop for every toll.  THEY have no way to automagically determine # of axles.

3) Also in NY is the NYS Thruway authority.  They cover almost everything else in the state.  

4) NJ has the Turnpike/parkway authoriity, and they allow high-speed (50mph) EZPass thru-lanes.

 

I give you these facts because:

4 yrs ago I drove a E250 heavy duty Van with lots of computer parts, and was repeatedly stopped on the MTA bridges and told that my ezpass tag was the wrong color, and thus charging me (them) wrong, and that I needed a blue, instead of white tag.

 

UPDATE:  This page has a VERY (in my mind) simple explanation of toll /axle categories http://www.thruway.ny.gov/travelers/tolls/classes.html

(Emphasis ADDed!)

Vehicle classification is based on the height of the vehicle over the first two axles and the total number of axles, including any towed vehicles or trailers .

 

Next:  According to the Port Authority EZpass agency (where my tags are registered)  my Ford F550 truck is a class 5 vehicle, and (with dually wheels) is (couldn't get a straight answer from them) either considered 3 axles or 4 axles. (See above!)

I was also told that my 5-er with two axles IS considered additional tolls, and that if I wanted I could either:

get ONE tag that would cover both the CoW and the TRUCK (5 or 6 axles), but I would be overcharged if I ever traveled without the 5-er.

   or

Get TWO tags.  One for the TRUCK (3-4 axles) and ONE for the 5-er (2 axles), and mount them BOTH in the truck windshield when traveling.

(and that page added update, REALLY HELPS.

 

oops, this page, same agency, gives more questions, specifically: 5-ers..

For example, a 2-axle pick-up truck with a 2-axle 5th wheel trailer, 7'6" or greater, which extends forward over the rear axle, would be classified as a 4H. Using this same logic, a 2-axle pick-up truck with a 3-axle 5th wheel trailer, 7'6" or greater, would be classified as a 5H.

 

And yet it still gets more complicated... The same agency: (NYS Thruway) says HERE: http://www.thruway.ny.gov/ezpass/discount.html#specialtowing

that :

Thruway Special Discount Towing Plan: Pickup truck towing a “5th Wheel” or “Gooseneck” trailer will receive a discounted rate. Tag specific plan for towing vehicle combination only. 


If you are towing a car, trailer, camper or boat and want to use a dedicated E-ZPass lane to reduce your travel time you can get a special tag. The tag is programmed for the tow vehicle and trailer combination. The tag must only be used with the vehicle towing combination. You must first have established an E-ZPass account with the New York E-ZPass Customer Service Center. Complete the form below to request your special tag.

So there it goes.  Tons of info.

and as a gander, I've included a quickie cheat sheet of tolls at the George Washington Bridge (only the most popular  way for MH/5-ers or anything with propane) into NYC/Long Island..  for a regular passenger car, the toll is not $23, but $13.00

Sigh, way too complicated, even for me.

Bottom line, expect major $$$ when traveling via ezpass or sunpass.

 

OH, btw, according to a law passed by CONGRESS in 2013, by 2016 ALL agencies, iincluding sunpass/ezpass, and points westward MUST ALL INTER-CONNECT and cross honor the other's passes.   YAY Congress! (for a change...!)

Bjoyce, I use a Static Shield Bag provided by EZpass to keep in the glove box for the transponder not being used???

Although I've never checked my billing statements for double readings, maybe I should from these posts?

My, my....

....after reading Mitch's comment, I have but one.  Avoid New York entirely if towing a trailer.

In Oklahoma, the Oklahoma Turnpike Authority issues stickers now that mount permanently to the windshield.  Since we had "Pikepass" accounts for both of our vehicles, we were told that we could go online and change the F450 from two axles to four axles if we had an upcoming trip that would involve us towing the Mobile Suites and using the turnpike.  Once the trip was over, we could go back online and change it back to 2 axles.

Oklahoma Turnpike Authority has advised us that we can use our Pikepass accounts in Texas, but I can't remember if it applied to all turnpikes.  We also were recently notified that beginning on November 1, Kansas will honor the OTA's Pikepass accounts.

We have two transponders, one for the motor home and one for the Honda Fit. 

With the motor home towing the Fit we paid $28 to cross the Ohio Turnpike from end to end and $40 to cross ONE bridge in Delaware! I try to check the tolls before we travel so we won't get blindsided, but couldn't find the relevant info for that bridge in Delaware.
