Hi Everyone. Well, after 15 years the RV-Dreams Community Forum is coming to an end. Since it began in August 2005, we've had 58 Million page views, 124,000 posts, and we've spent about $15,000 to keep this valuable resource for RVers free and open. But since we are now off the road and have settled down for the next chapter of our lives, we are taking the Forum down effective June 30, 2021. It has been a tough decision, but it is now time.

We want to thank all of our members for their participation and input over the years, and we want to especially thank those that have acted as Moderators for us during our amazing journey living and traveling in our RV and growing the RV-Dreams Family. We will be forever proud to have been founders of this Forum and to have been supported by such a wonderful community. Thank you all!!

Pre-purchase checklist for inspecting used fifth wheel?

http://www.rvdoctor.com/2011/10/pre-sale-rv-inspections-are-crucial.html

If you are serious about the purchase ......You need to hire a service tech. to do A pre- delivery inspection.

Better to spend a few dollars and have it gone thru by someone who knows what to look for than spend thousands on repairs you overlooked!!!

Something to think about:  Would you buy a home without first getting a professional home inspection ?

If you feel competent enough to do this on your own here is a list.....................

Take a look at this short list of items to get the idea of what kind of things you will be looking for.

  • Propane system with complete leak test
  • Batteries
  • Refrigerators run on both propane and electricity make sure it works on both
  • Air conditioning and heating systems
  • Toilet functionality
  • Rot and leaks
  • Bubbles, corrosion or rust
  • Engine inspection
  • Brakes
  • Electrical system both 110v and 12v ....complete inverter/converter/charger.......Generator
  • Stove and cooking gear
  • Slide outs in good working order
  • Awnings
  • Windows
  • Electronics Entertainment Home theater and music systems
  • Lighting systems
  • Wear on interior & complete roof ispection
  • Shower and sleeping quarters........Hot water heater
  • Tires for unusual ware spots
  • Service records

if you use this list make sure you itemize it......and do a complete go thru on each Item.

Hi all!  Thanks so much for all your input!  As we are learning more about this process, we realize what little we know about inspecting an RV.

Does anyone have a good checklist for pre-purchase inspection of a fifth wheel?

Thank you!

Thank you! I was thinking that we would do a preliminary inspection and if it passes our test, to hire an inspector to check more thoroughly.

This is my thinking....but how is it usually done? What is the procedure when we go to look at a rig? Would you mind listing it out for us?

I just posted the list....that should be your preliminary check list.......look at everything on that list if anything fails to perform properly adjust the price accordingly or walk away .....if 3 things fail find another dealership...they are not inspecting the unit prior to putting it on the lot......

What I meant is: Do we just go look at it the first day to see if we like it overall, then go back the next day to do the preliminary check, then hire an inspector the day after that, etc. These types of things are what I was wondering about, in terms of the procedure.

I'd say you would be doing the preliminary check while looking to see if you liked it overall. When we shop, we are looking in every nook and cranny while deciding how much we like it. You'll need to make an appointment with an inspector and one may not be immediately available, especially a more competent one. I saw a tech do an inspection once on a smaller 5th wheel and he spent 2 hours going through it with a clipboard and equipment. Intense and moving around the entire 2 hours.
