Hi Everyone. Well, after 15 years the RV-Dreams Community Forum is coming to an end. Since it began in August 2005, we've had 58 Million page views, 124,000 posts, and we've spent about $15,000 to keep this valuable resource for RVers free and open. But since we are now off the road and have settled down for the next chapter of our lives, we are taking the Forum down effective June 30, 2021. It has been a tough decision, but it is now time.

We want to thank all of our members for their participation and input over the years, and we want to especially thank those that have acted as Moderators for us during our amazing journey living and traveling in our RV and growing the RV-Dreams Family. We will be forever proud to have been founders of this Forum and to have been supported by such a wonderful community. Thank you all!!

We will join you all, one day!

Hi Everybody:

I so want to be on the road biggrin

I am a single mother of 3 (25 yr old son, twin 9 yr old daughters).  I worked for the State of Colorado before I had to go on disability due to multiple sclerosis.  I am still mobile and I want to accomplish my dream (travel), while I still am.  I want to put my stuff in storage, hop in an RV, and hit the road.  Several issues of course, my daughters need school (nature is a great classroom I believe), so I'll have to home school; finances - I get disability but thought I could work on the road (22 years of programming, maybe developing web pages) because it disability just won't be enough; and of course, giving up the homestead (just renting) and putting my household items in storage.  I would like to sell everything, but with 2 9 year olds, I think after a year or so, we would have to move back into a house.

I am just starting my research  for this great adventure - on all of the items to think about, costs, RVs, etc., and ran across this site.  It has been very helpful so far.  If any of you kind people would like to offer suggestions on:

Motorhome Vs 5th Wheel;

Best RV parks;

What difficulties you have ran across and the solutions you came up with;

How secure do you feel in an RV;

Workamping;

and anything else you might think helpful in planning an adventure like this.

Thank you all in advance for you suggestions, advice, etc.

Aloralee

Jamie,

Welcome to the RV Dreams forums.  You will find this to be a site with a lot of knowledgeable, friendly, helpful, and encouraging people.  They have knowledge of just about every kind of RV there is, as well as a lot about the lifestyle of RV'ing.

We have forum "Categories" where you will find the answers to a lot of your questions.  With regard to choosing one, be sure and include the twin daughters as they may see things that they like that you may not have thought about and can steer you into other thoughts about the RV's features.

Now, while this is being presumptive, you might lean a wee little bit more towards a motorhome instead of a trailer.  The main reason is that with motorhomes you may have fewer "outside" things to have to mess with than you would with a trailer.  With a trailer, one may have to always unhook the tow vehicle before one can level their trailer.  With a motorhome, it may be merely a case of pushing some buttons in the cab to get it leveled.  Then, all you would have to do was hook up water, electric, and sewer.

Feel free to ask all the questions you want because there are no "dumb" questions.  The dumb ones are the ones that aren't asked which may lead to an expensive lesson down the road.

With regards to workkamping, there are a lot of options.  With the web development idea, pay attention to the advice of a number of folks here, especially so with Technomadia (I think that's the right spelling) as they do a lot to help folks get hooked up to internet and phones to make the working lifestyle easier.

Good luck with your research and planning.

Oh, and Jo and I are really looking forward to a trip to your beautiful state around October.  We have relatives living in the Canon City, Cripple Creek and soon the Colorado Springs areas.  With that in mind, if you have any good suggestions for a place for Autumn colors around the first of October, I'm open for suggestions.

Glad to have you as part of the family.

Terry

Hi Aloralee!

Go you for embracing life and your physical mobility while you can! Where there's a will.. there's a way!

You'll be joining quite a tribe of remote working nomads on the road - many of us out here doing various forms of programming, web development and design. And lots of family's on the road too, including single moms and their kids.

If you're on Facebook, there's a great group for NomadicMama's that might be a helpful resource for connecting with other mobile moms - https://www.facebook.com/groups/nomadicmama/  .  Also google for Families on the Road, and Full Time Families - two other groups that can help you connect in with homeshooling resources, and raising your girls on the road.

Also, on our blog, we have a list of dozens of 'working on the road' younger RVers that you might like to check out: http://www.technomadia.com/young-full-time-rving-nomads/

We also have video interviews with a lot of our peers at: http://www.technomadia.com/ramblings

And we have a logistics article series at http://www.technomadia.com/excuses - which goes over a lot of the things relevant to us mobile working folks, from family, mail, internet, healthcare, income sources, etc.

For RV-type - a lot of families lean towards 5th Wheels, as there are some models available with a separate bedroom for the kiddos, or bunk setups.  But being a solo mom, you might find that a motorhome setup might be easier to manage.

Best wishes,

 - Cherie
