Hi Everyone. Well, after 15 years the RV-Dreams Community Forum is coming to an end. Since it began in August 2005, we've had 58 Million page views, 124,000 posts, and we've spent about $15,000 to keep this valuable resource for RVers free and open. But since we are now off the road and have settled down for the next chapter of our lives, we are taking the Forum down effective June 30, 2021. It has been a tough decision, but it is now time.

We want to thank all of our members for their participation and input over the years, and we want to especially thank those that have acted as Moderators for us during our amazing journey living and traveling in our RV and growing the RV-Dreams Family. We will be forever proud to have been founders of this Forum and to have been supported by such a wonderful community. Thank you all!!

I am also pretty sure Howard bought Lifeline AGM batteries. They are also what we have. Maintenance free, take a charge really well, take a load really well, and they should last. I will admit that once ours die we are tempted to get Lithium batteries since we could have a lot more usable battery capacity in the same space. The only problem is the price is still fairly high.

Edit: Lithium is what Technomadia, who sometimes post here, have.

Hey Howard,,, I know a short while back you mentioned that you broke down and bought new house batteries. I have searched and searched to find what it was you decided on but I'm having no luck. Can you tell me what they are??

It seems we are in need so I'm doing my research again. It seems that all I do at times is research LOL!!

Yes, we upgraded to the Lifeline AGM batteries back in 2007.  Love them!

Details are on our web page:  Our Electrical/Solar System - A Phased In Approach

We just bought 4 Lifeline GPL-4CT AGM 6 volt batteries from Powerstride Battery for only $286.00 each with free shipping. Quite a good deal.

To cap this off I thought I would touch base.

I installed 4 of the Lifeline 6CT's AND installed 4 140 watt solar panels. DANG,,, we should have done this long ago.

We pulled into the desert here at Q yesterday,,, did all of our normal stuff,, had lights on last night,,, watched a couple hours of tv,,, got up this morning and have ran the heater a couple cycles already and made coffee and still have not used the genny and the sunisn't even up yet. I think this will add a whole new twist to our boon docking as we travel LOL!!

Dave,

Yes, those Lifeline's are on my shopping list when we start the solar install in the spring. Glad to hear that your system is working out! Nice to have that freedom, you are now ready for Friday and the forthcoming Apocolypse!!!!

Just curious to the rest of your system set-up if you would not mind sharing?

Les

My current equipment recommendations are on my website. They change over time, and also change somewhat depending on if you are doing MPPT or not.

Before buying ANYTHING you need to do an energy audit and also a complete design. And fully understand possible expansion considerations. I ALWAYS design for expansion. Almost everyone expands their system over time. It is cheap to do during initial installation and a nightmare to do later.

I also use Lifelines in my current system. You really can not beat an AGM battery bank. There is nothing negative to say about them other than the cost. Lithium - IMO - is still at the stage of "early adopters". More of a "hobbiest" type of battery. That said, if you are capable of dealing with them they "may" be a good alternative to AGM if you can bear the cost. They make AGM seem "cheap" - but the cost per amphour over time may be acceptable to you.  I'm not anticipating going to lithium for several years.

On panels, IMO you shop for cost per watt. Unless you have special needs, that drive you to a certain type/density of panel. Most do not have those needs. Take a look at Sun Electronics for good pricing on blemished panels. These have full warranty. These should come in at under $1.50 a watt, and in some configurations/types considerably less. The panels I put on this RV were $1.38/watt at the time. I have 4x205 watt high voltage panels. The issue in some installations is footprint - these are 32"x62" so they will not fit everywhere.
