Hi Everyone. Well, after 15 years the RV-Dreams Community Forum is coming to an end. Since it began in August 2005, we've had 58 Million page views, 124,000 posts, and we've spent about $15,000 to keep this valuable resource for RVers free and open. But since we are now off the road and have settled down for the next chapter of our lives, we are taking the Forum down effective June 30, 2021. It has been a tough decision, but it is now time.


We want to thank all of our members for their participation and input over the years, and we want to especially thank those that have acted as Moderators for us during our amazing journey living and traveling in our RV and growing the RV-Dreams Family. We will be forever proud to have been founders of this Forum and to have been supported by such a wonderful community. Thank you all!!

Sofa Bed Mattress replacement

I just saw the mattress on the love seat sofa bed in my new RV !!! it was very thin and looks very uncomfortable so I want to replace it before leaving. The size is a bit odd, 41 inches wide, 68 inches long - between a twin & full. Does anyone know where I can get a new mattress (would prefer a memory foam one )? also, any suggestions on sheets as well...Thanks!

Two problems.... some sofa sleepers won't close up with too thick of a mattress.

Memory foam custom sized can get expensive.

Some of the sleeper sofa now come with an aerobed type mattress. One that can be blown up as needed. They a very comfortable and collapse to allow the sofa to close up tight. One caution be sure to cover any sharp edges that can puncture the air bed mattress.

Other option is to look in the back section of an RV magazine, there is a company that makes custom sized RV mattresses.

Actually the thin matress on our sofa sleeper is very comfortable. It's a dense foam so it holds up well.

We replaced the couch and two recliners that came in our Mobile Suites with a La-Z-Boy Reclina-Way love seat and a Lane euro-chair.  Since we no longer have a couch with the air mattress that comes with it, we bought an air mattress with the built in compressor.  Airs it up or sucks the air out in about 3 minutes.  When not in use, it goes in its own bag and gets stored elsewhere.

Now, we have much more comfortable furniture and a more comfortable air mattress.  When Jo's sister and brother-in-law were down, they slept on it and said it was just fine for sleeping.

We got ours at Bed, Bath, and Beyond.

I found the mattress on our sofa bed was also thin...I put  a 2"memory foam on it from costco..works just fine folds up fine (it compresses)...I use double (full) size sheets on it...hubby and I have slept on it and its very comfy....

As was mentioned, the sleeper section might not fold up properly if you put a mattress that is thicker than what is already there. If you add some additioin foam or egg crate material, then where will you store it when not in use? If it is not too thick you might be able to push it under the sofa if there is clearance.

You mentioned that it is 68 inches long. Is that inside the arm rests? If not, an adult of average height may find sleeping on it a bit uncomfortable regardless of the mattress material.

I'd respecfully suggest a nice air mattress. They are not so much of a storage issue. We have a couple for the grandkids when they RON in the RV, and frankly, they are just as nice as our own bed.

Can't help with the sheets unless you sew. My wife buys the least expensive king size for all beds and cuts them down to the size needed.

If the current mattress is indeed uncomfortable I think I would see if a full size air mattress would fit on top of it and if so purchase one of those. That's what we did with our old motorhome. It will store easily and solve the sheet issue. Unless the extra bed will be used frequently I'd hesitate to put much money into it.

Just what I was looking at on the Costco site!  Dont want an aerobed - already have on of those in queen & I would have to move furniture to get it positioned in the space. Couldnt decide between twin & full so your response helped!

You mean the 2" Memory Foam on top of the original mattress or replace the mattress completely with the 2" Memory Foam?

Looking at:
F-350/Ram 3500 type truck, possibly an Airstream or a smaller 5th Wheel.

However, there is still time to change the configuration, just a plan.

Memory foam is great, it took me a little while to adjust to ours. It seemed like it didn't have very good back support but I stuck with it because the DW liked it so well, now I really like it.  It can be cut to any size with an electric knife.  PS ours is not on a sofa bed, its on our regular queen bed, so I'm just talking memory foam in general.

Our 5th wheel has a king bed...the mattress was not very comfortable.....bought a 3 inch memory foam topper....it's now awesome! We have a memory form mattress in our home....so I love the feel. It made the RV bed like a brand new bed!! Got the topper at Overstock.com and it was only $90.00 for a king and the best part...it did not have the strong odor that they sometimes do.

I don't know how it would work on a sofa bed...with having to fold it in......

I purchased a double/full size and it fit perfectly..its the 2" memory foam...I used double/full size sheets..and the memory foam is just on top of the sofa bed mattress..the memory foam compacts when folded up...I never take it off the sofa bed...it compacts so well I can fold up the sofa bed with it on there....

I put the 2" memory foam on top of the sofa mattress...I also put a queen size memory foam on our bed in the motorhome...and one on our bed at home...love them....

Has anybody tried a feather bed? They are amazingly comfortable and have pretty much saved my life! And - they are very affordable!
